This Month: Women and Feminism
What better subject to explore than women and feminism when the country is in the middle of the first Presidential campaign where a woman is a candidate!
Our selection this month includes the arguments Susan B. Anthony and Matilda Joslyn Gage made before the US House of Representatives for the right of women to vote to Annie Lebeivotiz' photos of a wide variety of women, including a young Hillary Clinton.
Also presented are a book about women "problem solvers," a biography of Josephine Baker and essays by Gloria Steinem, travel books by women authors, and a look at poor working women in the early Twentieth Century.

A lovely book with over 100 tipped-in photos of distinguished women in full formal dress for their time. The writing is about these women, whose civil service and charitable contributions toward the San Francisco's Panama Pacific International Exposition in 1915, entertainment, receptions for dignitaries, and many other California events and functions was recorded herein.

Cape to Cairo, The Record of a Historic Motor Journey

A party of six people set off from Cape Town in two Crossley light trucks in September 1924 and reached Cairo sixteen months and 12,732 miles later.
The author was the only woman on the expedition, and acted as cook, doctor, seamstress and diarist for the group. Although Treatt occasionally wished for "a big bath and silky clothes to wear," more often "I like[d] my shorts and would not trade them for a skirt."
A contemporary review praised the work for its highly readable style and also for being "more than a travel book. This is a diary in the best sense of being an intimate reflection of the writer's personality." Available Here.

Seton (b. 1872) was the author of many travel books, several of which recounted her adventures hunting big game, fishing, and collecting specimens in the American and Canadian West with her naturalist husband Ernest Thompson.
Later, she became an advocate for women's rights and traveled internationally to learn about the condition of women abroad.
This book recounts her trip to China, during which she took pains to meet with women of various levels of influence and education and to describe how the role of women in Chinese society was changing, and where she felt reforms were needed. Available Here.

Josephine Baker was an American-born French dancer, jazz and pop music singer, and actress, who came to be known in various circles as the "Black Pearl," "Bronze Venus" "Jazz Cleopatra", and even the "Creole Goddess". Born Freda Josephine McDonald in St. Louis, Missouri, Baker became a citizen of France in 1937. She was fluent in both English and French.
Josephine Baker was the first black woman to star in a major motion picture, Zouzou (1934), and to become a world-famous entertainer. Baker refused to perform for segregated audiences in the United States and is noted for her contributions to the Civil Rights Movement.
