A Message from Council Member
Pete Meitzner...

In the last few weeks, Mother Nature has not been too kind to our City.  From earthquakes to downpours, these uncommon events have really tested our City's solid infrastructure.
On Saturday, September 3, we were all shaken by a 5.8 earthquake.  This quake was the largest in state history, but our City held up pretty well.  City staff found minor damage to Century II, the Wichita Art Museum, the City Hall parking garage, the downtown library and other structures.  None are immediate risks to safety. The cost of damage to City property is still being evaluated but is believed to be less than the City's $250,000 deductible.

Last Thursday and Friday, Wichita received a second 100-year flood event in a three-week period.  Severe flooding was all around us, but thankfully, once again, there was limited damage within the City limits.  We should credit the past and present efforts of City officials and staff to ensure a solid infrastructure to endure these freaks of nature.

The mission of the City of Wichita is to provide an environment to protect the health, safety and well- being of all who live and work in the community.  Of course we have some problems with aging infrastructure and we are working on affordable corrective solutions. With your support and input, we will continue to put our focus and resources on assuring a safe, solid infrastructure into the future. I firmly believe the recent earthquake and storms prove that's where our focus should be.

Walktober website

Walk with Friends!
Whether with a friend, family member, neighbor or pet, having a walking partner will remind you to get moving while you enjoy October's mild temperatures.

What is Walktober?
Walktober is a free, community-wide physical activity initiative, encouraging you to engage in the recommended 30 minutes of activity five or more days of the week and walking is a perfect way to meet that goal.

Why Walktober?
Why do we need a designated month to put one foot in front of the other? On average, experts say, we take a fraction of the recommended 10,000 steps per day. Walking is an easy exercise that packs powerful benefits, such as weight management and blood pressure control. Walking also decreases your risk of a heart attack, lowers your risk of a stroke and even protects against hip fractures.

What do you need to do to participate?
2. Record your physical activity on the calendar card.  Any physical activity counts - walking, swimming, biking, etc.  Count in minutes, steps, miles - whatever is most convenient for you.
3. Be inspired by the weekly newsletter.
4. Report your Walktober participation at the end of the month with the link provided for a chance to win prizes!

Follow Walktober Wichita on Facebook for up to date information, prizes and more!
