September 22, 2016
From the Desk of Dr. Molly Grumich
Principal
Dear Parents & Guardians:

I hope all of you are feeling a little less stress this week as we return to life after Spirit Week. No crazy outfits, no cans to buy, no dance apparel and events to plan for! It is so much fun for the students and we all appreciate your support for the students.

At this point I hope all of you have read the emails the faculty sent last week to introduce themselves to you. The emails offered you a glimpse into them as individuals as well as shared some important class information for you. Although we would have wished for Back to School Night to get to meet parents, in light of the circumstances, I thought the emails were a great way for you to learn more about the faculty and the classes. If you haven't gotten a chance to read them yet, please do.

SENIOR PARENTS: On Monday, Oct 3rd from 6:00-8:00, IWA will be hosting a FAFSA FRENZY  just for you. The head of financial aid from Saint Louis University will be here for a brief presentation and then you have the chance to get one on one help with your FAFSA that evening. The meeting will happen in the Learning Commons and if you are interested in coming, please use the link here to sign up for an appointment. Please hurry as there is limited availability that evening.

All Juniors will be meeting on October 3 at mod 7 to receive their Junior Service Packet of information.  The girls will be given over 80 suggested service sites for their community service project as well as the required forms that must be completed and turned in to the Campus Ministry Office no later than December 2.

  2. At least 5 more volunteers are needed to help from 5:00-10:00 p.m. at the Birthright Gala being held at the St. Charles Convention Center on October 22.  Please contact Ms. Pitti at gpitti@iwacademy.org if you would like to volunteer.
  3. We are collecting bags of candy to donate to the "Play It Safe" Halloween Fun Fair that will be held at Cardinal Ritter College Prep School on October 29th.  The event allows kids in the city of St. Louis to enjoy games and have fun in a safe environment.  All donations of candy bags can be turned in to Ms. Pitti by October 17th.
  4. KEEN St. Louis provides one-to-one recreational opportunities for children with mental and physical disabilities, at no cost to their families and caregivers.  Autism, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and down syndrome are just a few of the disabilities that challenge these kids daily. KEEN is looking for volunteers to help with their swim program which is held at The Center of Clayton every other Sunday.  If anyone would like to volunteer, please contact Shannon Murphy, an IWA alum at (314) 805-0124
  5. Visitation Academy's Campus Ministry Club is sponsoring an event called "Capturing a Cure" and it is a fun day of Capture the Flag, food, henna, and other games held at Viz on Saturday, Oct 15 from 12:30 - 3:30.  Proceeds will go to Be the Match, a charity that uses donations to help blood cancer patients afford transplants, find a matching marrow donor, and have a successful transplant. This is in honor of Kate McKee Mitchell, mother of Emma Mitchell, class of 2015, who died of blood cancer in 2015.  So if you are interested in participating in this event, pick up an order form in Ms. Pitti's office.  Form and money are due Friday, September 30th.

FROM THE ATHLETIC OFFICE:
It's been a Great Week!

Cross Country took 2nd in the Lutheran North Invitational - Brooke Fredrickson 3rd, Helen Demarcantonio 9th, and Emily Paridy 12th with many medals. They will travel to Warrenton, MO Saturday to compete. Our Golf Team played MICDS and Lutheran South at Sunset Hills on Tuesday. The scores were MICDS 171, IWA 194, Lutheran South 223.  That counts as a loss to MICDS, but a win against Lutheran South.  Ashley Fite had 3 birdies in a row to finish with a 40.  Team co-captain Emma Famous shot a 47, a personal best. Contributing to the win were Kaitlin Johnson and Reanna Radford. On Wednesday, they beat Visitation Academy with a team score of 187, a new season low.  IWA 187, Viz 192.  Ashley Fite was the medalist for the match with a 42 and contributing to the win was Kaitlin Johnson with a 47 and Freshman Bella Barbaglia with 47.  Team co-captain Emma Famous and Catherine Salem tied with a 51. Tonight they will celebrate their seniors at Normandie competing against Barat Academy with a 4 pm start. Softball had a solid 10 run rule victory; they won the game 12-2 in the 6th over St. Joseph's Academy.  Freshman Nikki Abbott had her first high school homerun. On Tuesday they had another 10 run rule victory over Ursuline Academy, winning the game 10-0; Jade Gates hit a 3-run homer. Varsity Tennis had a solid 5-0 victory over Ursuline Academy last Thursday. Both varsity and JV played very well against Cor Jesu on Senior Night. Thanks to Mia, Genna, & Maura for all your contributions to IWA Tennis. The team is looking good heading into Districts next week. All three Volleyball teams beat Hazelwood Central last Thursday and again all three squads had a definitive sweep of Rock Bridge High School from Columbia, MO. Congrats to all the teams! Booster items are ordered and due in the next couple weeks. I will send an email when they arrive and I will deliver them to your daughters.

I will post about our teams and provide special announcements on social media. So please click on the links and follow the Red Knights!
