President's Message

Judicial activism was the name of the game in October, providing an inspiring glimpse of what post-ban asbestos advocacy can do!

Early in the month Drs. Arthur Frank, Barry Castleman, and I had the honor of presenting at Brazil's first-ever National Gathering of Relatives and Victims of Asbestos. This remarkable event was funded by the polluter-payer principle, meaning fines stemming from an asbestos lawsuit paid for the victims' gathering. ADAO was also awarded a significant restitution award from fines assessed in an asbestos lawsuit in Washington state. Finally - the folks causing so much damage are finally being held accountable.

ADAO Science Advisory members Dr. Richard Lemen and Dr. Arthur Frank were both honored in October with prestigious Collegium Ramazzini awards for their long-standing dedicated work toward ending asbestos-caused diseases.

Last month, we published the first two installments in a trilogy of political cartoons aimed at bolstering our call for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to protect the American public from deadly asbestos. Keep your eyes peeled for the third and final cartoon coming soon. Huge thanks to cartoonists John Curtis and Dr. Jack of South Africa for their brilliant work!

I'll be traveling to Australia in November to present at the Asbestos Safety and Eradication Agency's (ASEA) Asbestos Awareness Conference, on invitation from the Australian government. It will be fabulous to reconnect and strategize with leaders of the anti-asbestos movement during such a pivotal time for U.S. asbestos policy.

We're moving mountains and every victory is a team effort. I must say, as I look to our recent accomplishments, I couldn't feel more proud and grateful for the phenomenal team in ADAO's corner. From board members, to sponsors, to volunteers - YOU are making a world of difference.

2017 ASBESTOS AWARENESS CONFERENCE

It's such a delight to reconnect with the community each year at our annual conference, but this year when we convene in Washington, DC, on April 7-9, 2017, we will (hopefully!) have some serious progress to celebrate.

As a special treat this year, ADAO is thrilled to host a Potomac River Cruise for all conference attendees! This evening outing will give us a great chance to catch up with one another and enjoy a beautiful view of our nation's capital!
