LEGISLATIVE UPDATE - Your Chamber Working for Your Business

Proposal to Increase Sidewalk Snow Clearing Fines for Commercial Property Owners:  Councilmember Hans Riemer is seeking sponsors for a bill that would dramatically increase fines for snow removal violations by commercial property owners. THe bill is based on a bill passed in the District of Columbia. Under current Montgomery County law, violations by all property owners carry the same penalty: a $50 fine for the first offense and a $75 fine for subsequent offenses. This bill would increase the fines for only commercial property owners to $500 for the first offense and $750 for each subsequent offense. See the proposed bill here. GSSCC has a number of issues with this bill that we will forward to Councilmember Hucker. Among our concerns is the very common practice of State and County road crews coming in after private business have cleared their sidewalks and dumping all the snow and ice back onto sidewalks that have already been cleared. Members who have concerns should contact Jane Redicker.
WMATA Seeks Public Input on Plan to Shorten Operation Hours

Since the beginning of Metro's Safe Track program, operational hours have been shortened to provide additional time for maintenance. WMATA has proposed making these cutbacks permanent, but many business owners and riders oppose that move because it takes away an important travel option in the early morning and late evening hours. Metro has proposed four different options that each would allow for additional maintenance hours. Here is a link to more information. A public hearing has been scheduled for Thursday, October 20, at Metro Headquarters, 600 5th St., N.W. in Washington, D.C. Testimony will be heard on a first come, first served basis between 12:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. Alternatively written comments may be submitted to [email protected]. In addition, Metro is conducting an online survey at wmata.com/hours. Members should encourage their patrons and employees who rely on Metro to complete the survey.
