Letter from the President

Nicholas Unkovic
BABC President & Partner

Dear Friend of the BABC,

Fall is here, which means we are starting to get ready for our biggest event of the year, the 53rd Annual BABC Christmas Luncheon. Please make sure you book your table as soon as possible as this event always sells out. All the information you need is posted on our website here, and we look forward to welcoming you to the best Holiday event in the City of San Francisco.

While many enjoy a slightly slower pace over the Summer months, that has not been the case with the BABC of Northern California. We have seen a steady increase in new members, and continue to show an excellent retention rate with member renewals and upgrades.

The much anticipated 2016 Clash for the Ashes took place on Saturday, August 27th at Piper Park in Marin.  Team England gave us all something to cheer about as the they reclaimed the coveted trophy from our Aussie friends. Congratulations to Team England, commiserations to our friends at the Australian Chamber of Commerce, and a big thank you to all our sponsors, donors and over 200 who came out for a glorious day of Cricket, refreshments and fun. Pictures of the event may be seen here.

This month's Young Professionals Happy Hour saw a gathering of new and returning attendees representing a variety of industries including tech, medical research, education, law, and finance. Our continued thanks to Hotel Vitale and the staff at the Americano Restaurant and Bar for allowing us to host this important networking event on the second Tuesday of every month. Mark your calendars: October's Happy Hour will take place on Tuesday the 11th.

Thank you to all the new members who have joined the BABC over the last month and to all of our continuing members for showing their support of our growing organization by renewing and upgrading your memberships. Please take a moment to visit their websites and learn more - they may be able to help you!

I hope to see you at one of our upcoming events.

Best,
Nick Unkovic
President, BABC Northern California

From The Consul General's  Desk
Welcome to HM Consul General Andrew Whittaker

I wanted to start off my first column with BABC members by saying thank you for this opportunity. It's been a whirlwind first few weeks in San Francisco, but I'm enjoying getting to know each of you and appreciate the work you are all doing.

I thought I'd start my monthly column by focusing on one of the biggest and most positive international events of the past month: the Olympics and the Paralympics, which are happening right now. Whilst my own sporting - ahem - contribution was taking part in the 'sac races in Larkspur last month, these events are just one example of the way Britain remains a strong, competing force in the global community.

Two weeks ago, we saw a wonderful host in Rio and an incredible effort by Team GB. Surpassing the number of medals won in 2012, Team GB, left Rio with 27 golds, 23 silvers, and 17 bronze - the first team to increase their medal count, one competition after hosting the Games.

Team GB dominated the velodrome, took home medals in men's golf, men's tennis, sailing, rowing and track and field. Mo Farah's (who also happens to train in Portland, Ore.) win in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters gave him a historic second double-double, the same events he took home gold in London 2012.

This week, I have no doubt we will see the same incredible feats from Paralympic athletes who began competing in their events last week.

London set a high bar here, fundamentally changing our attitudes toward disability by capturing the imagination of the world. Our Paralympics GB team was at the heart of that. And I personally was lucky enough to attend a number of events that year including one where David Weir won gold on the track and an exciting wheelchair basketball game.

As I round out my first month, I look forward to the pleasure of meeting many of you, (hopefully all), and learning more about the work you do here in the Bay Area.

Andrew Whittaker's column will appear monthly starting from September.

Organizations that need to keep long-term secrets, or which are designing systems that will be in use for ten or more years, need to plan for a post-quantum-computing world. NCC's whitepaper gives a short introduction and overview of post-quantum cryptography. NCC discusses why post-quantum crypto is needed and provide handles to determine how to plan for migration. Furthermore, providing an overview of promising post-quantum crypto directions and references for further reading.

"Why do we need post-quantum crypto?"

"Physicists continue to make progress with developing quantum computers. Once a sufficiently large quan-tum computer is available, it will be capable of breaking most of our current uses of cryptography. Post-quantum cryptography will survive such a quantum crypto-apocolypse".

Bicentennial Bell Garden Project - Help Make It Possible

Friends of Independence National Historical Park is excited to announce its new campaign to relocate the Bicentennial Bell to a newly renovated garden at the corner of 3rd and Walnut Street in Philadelphia.

The Bicentennial Bell was given to the United States of America from Great Britain in 1976 in honor of the 200th anniversary of American Independence. The bell, which was dedicated on July 6, 1976 by her majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, was given to show the joint heritage and purposes of the British and American peoples. On that day, Queen Elizabeth II shared her gratitude to America's Founding Fathers for teaching the British "to respect the right of others to govern themselves in their own way."
