Students Visit Wild Bird Center
|
Ivymount students Bradley and Kendra recently visited the
Wild Bird Center in Rockville as part of their
work experience at Locust Grove Nature Center.
Bradley and Kendra, along with their Job Coach, Paula Radbod, went to the Wild Bird Center in order to get bird feeders from Locust Grove fixed and to pick up bird seed for Locust Grove. While at the Wild Bird Center, Kendra and Bradley met with the center's owner, Pete Givan, and a staff member, Elaine. The students learned about the many different species of Hummingbirds (there are 114); what they eat; where they go during the cold, winter months; and how they stay safe from predators. Students asked a number of questions and left the center with a plethora of hummingbird knowledge!

Ivymount Classroom Businesses
|
|
Friday: 11
:45am - 12:30pm
If you visit Ivymount on a Friday, chances are that you will see staff and students eating a slice (or two!) of pizza.
The Ivymount Pizza Business
is a lunchtime café that sells pizza by the slice and a variety of beverages. First opened in 2003, the pizza business
operates in our
Community Business Space (Room 253),
a dedicated classroom set up to simulate a community convenience store and café. Students process cash transactions using a real-world point of sale cash register system, providing them exposure to industry-specific technology within the school setting.
Though not nearly as complex as community businesses, the Ivymount student businesses are generally more realistic because they are less controlled, time-sensitive, involve monetary exchange, and include interactions with customers. Students involved with our pizza business are trained across two employee roles, practice workplace routines such as checking in/out and following a to-do list for closing down, as well as learn basic customer service skills. The business also offers students of all ages an opportunity to practice important customer skills, such as waiting in line, purchasing, and responding to employee questions.
The pizza business is one of a number of student run businesses at Ivymount. We will continue to
highlight
the other
business
over the coming weeks.
If you have any questions regarding Ivymount businesses, please contact Yelena Vakhlis at
[email protected]
Tuesday at Lunch Daily: 10:00 - 10:30 Everyday: 9:05 - 9:30
