A Note from the President
Dear NASSM Members:

Howdy from Aggieland. I trust your semester is off to a wonderful start and you are enjoying the Fall weather.

The Executive Council will meet in October for our annual Fall meeting. In addition to conducting the regular business, we will consider future conference sites and various initiatives aimed at improving services to the NASSM membership.

Speaking of conferences, we hope you are making plans to join us in Denver this June. The conference promises to offer opportunities to learn about new research, to present your own scholarship, and to connect with colleagues from around the world. If you are planning on presenting at the conference, be sure to submit your abstract prior to November 1.

We look forward to seeing you in Denver, and please let me know if you have questions, comments, or concerns.

Best,

Dr. George Cunningham
NASSM President

NASSM Blog
The October NASSM blog contributor, Dr. Matt Walker from Texas A&M University, whose post, What makes a successful golf management university program?, discusses the nearly $200,000 grant awarded from the PGA of America to evaluate the Golf Management University landscape and formally identify and compare the characteristics of high and low performing GMU Programs. Visit the NASSM Blog to read more about Dr. Walker's research and industry partnership.

If you have an idea for the blog, please send a short description of your idea to Andrea Geurin.
Program News
Dr. Demetrius Pearson, Associate Professor of Health & Human Development at the University of Houston, was a recipient of the 2016 University of Houston Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award at its 62nd Annual Awards Gala on May 6, 2016.

A team of researchers at Leeds Beckett University (Leeds, UK) are currently working on a project that involves designing, piloting and evaluating a clean sport bystander intervention ('reACT') for student-athletes. The team is currently seeking prospective participant universities in the United States, Canada, and United Kingdom. For further details, please visit the program website or contact Dr. Kelsey Erickson.

The Mark H. McCormack Department of Sport Management at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applicants to its doctoral program for Fall 2017. The program, housed within the Isenberg School of Management (which is ranked within the top 15 business schools amongst public institutions), is unique in that it provides the student with PhD-level training in various areas of sport management, but within the context of a leading business school environment. The PhD program is now completely merged with the Isenberg School of Management's PhD program, so students actually receive a PhD in Management with a concentration in Sport Management. Additional information about the program, including admission requirements, can be found on the program website. Please direct all inquiries to Nefertiti A. Walker, Assistant Professor and PhD Coordinator via email or (413) 545-5012.

Lisa A. Kihl, Ph.D., (University of Minnesota), Vicki Schull, Ph.D. (MSU-Mankato), and Sally Shaw, Ph.D. (University of Otago, New Zealand), are authors of the recently published book, Gender Politics in US College Athletic Departments: The Case of the University of Minnesota Merger. Using the context of the merger of the men's and women's athletic departments at the University of Minnesota, the book provides an in-depth analysis of the gendered political processes involved in organizational change in the world of collegiate athletics. The book can be used as a course text, academic/practitioner resource, or for lay readers interested in the history of the U of M athletic departments.
Connect with NASSM
The Publicity & Promotions Committee works hard behind the scenes to ensure that the NASSM membership is up-to-date on the happenings of the executive council, conference manager, and the membership. We have a number of tools in our toolbox to keep you informed, but YOU - the member - must do your part to stay informed. How, you ask? Well, let us share the many ways in which you can engage with us.

NASSM Blog
We are seeking submissions for the  NASSM Blog. The blog aims to connect academics and practitioners with the latest research, programming, and innovations in the sport industry. If you have a story idea for the blog, please send a short description of your idea to Andrea Geurin.

If you're an Instagram user, please follow us at @nassm_sportmgt. While this  account will not post a lot throughout the  year, we plan to use it heavily during  NASSM conferences in upcoming years. We've got several plans for the account during next year's  conference in Denver to help our membership become more engaged on Instagram, including some daily photo contests!

Twitter
Follow us on Twitter to get the latest updates , reminders, and/or general information about the organization.

We also rely on the tried, but true Facebook. So, please follow us there for news, photos, reminders, links to our latest NASSM Blog, and other great information! If you haven't liked NASSM on Facebook, you can do it here!

If you have something you'd like to share through our social media channels, please contact Brianna Newland and we'll get it posted for you!
The Teaching & Learning Repository!
As a reminder, the P&P Committee is expanding what we share at the Teaching and Learning Fair at the NASSM conference to the NASSM Blog! This is an excellent way to share the activities, projects, and pedagogical strategies NASSM members are using in their sport management classrooms. The sharing of these strategies and materials help other members innovate and improve their practice in the classroom, which makes all of our programs stronger. While the NASSM website currently hosts the short abstracts that members submit for these Teaching and Learning Fair presentations, we would like to further highlight all of the great things our members are doing in their classrooms.

Visit the NASSM Blog for more information and to find out how to submit materials to our new Teaching Repository! Or, email Melissa Davies to submit your classroom activities!
Tribute to Michael Judd

Dear Colleagues,

Michael Judd, one of our esteemed and valued colleagues, passed away on July 4, 2016, as the result of an unfortunate accident. Mike was 69.

Those of us fortunate to call him a friend and to have had professional interactions with Mike over the last three decades will remember him for his warmth of character, larger-than-life presence, and good-natured ways.

Mike contributed greatly to the fields of Sport Management, Physical Education, and Coaching. As a practitioner, he left his mark on the profession as an Administrator, Professor, and Coach, always markedly improving the programs in which he was involved. One hallmark of Mike's career was his ability to investigate, research, present, and publish on issues and problems that were highly relevant, due in part to his broad range of experiences as a practitioner. Furthermore, anyone who collaborated with Mike quickly grew to value his ability to brainstorm ideas and approaches to inquiry and research within our field.

As a scholar, Mike's work was published in numerous professional journals, such as Journal of Sport Management, Sociology of Sport Journal, Journal of Teaching in Physical Education, Journal of Athletic Training, The Physical Educator, and the Journal of Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance. Mike also made a significant number of scholarly presentations at NASSM and AAHPERD conferences. His scholarly contributions helped move sport management and physical education forward.

We will miss his friendship, his generous spirit, and his kindheartedness.

Sincerely,

Bernie and Ruth Goldfine, Kennesaw State University

Donna Pastore, Ohio State University
Student Board Update
Hello NASSM student members!

The student board is already hard at work trying to make NASSM 2017 the best student experience it can be. We have a stellar team ( Kyle Rich, Katie Reifurth, Kayla Smith, & Mark Slavich) put together and we can't wait for Denver!

If you haven't done so already, please fill out the student survey and give us feedback on your experience(s) with NASSM in the past year. We use this feedback to make changes to our initiatives so your input is vital to improving the student experience. We are looking forward to another awesome meeting in Denver and we are in the process of planning our usual initiatives: the student symposium, the faculty mentor initiative, and of course the student social. Keep your eyes on your email for updates regarding these initiatives throughout the year.

Also, head over to our Facebook page and give us a like. We promise not to overwhelm your newsfeed - only relevant and timely updates! If you ever have any questions / comments / concerns, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Best,
Student President
