Exploring STEM Municipal Conversations
OregonASK has been on the road again to build awareness around
the impact of bringing informal STEM opportunities to more Oregon youth.
We've been working with local STEM Hubs and partners to convene conversations around the amazing work being done throughout the state as we try to engage more municipal leaders in this work going forward.
Thanks to our grant from the National League of Cities Institute for Youth, Education and Families, we have already gathered 30-50 community representatives in each location; Hillsboro, Roseburg, Klamath Falls, Redmond, and Salem. This month, we will also be heading to
La Grande on October 5th and
Medford on October 10th.
Each community has taken time to discuss the state
STEM Strategic Plan as they share about local success and opportunities to continue collaborating.
If you are interested in joining the conversation,

Fall Training Recap!
September 15th through the 17th OregonASK hosted the National Youth Leadership Council's Service Learning for Afterschool training in Wilsonville.
With five Oregon Afterschool programs participating in the pilot this year, the training covered a wide range of possibilities for meaningful service learning projects designed by program youth and staff. Both staff and participating youth were in attendance at this exciting three day planning session.
The pilot, Service
Learning to Careers: The Art of Living, will support programs to develop one full year of service learning for middle school youth in the areas of health, environmental science, or art and language arts.

Summer Learning Legislative Update
After convening a Summer Learning Work Group several times over the last 5 months, Representative Smith Warner is ready to move forward with a legislative ask to support summer learning programs in Oregon. During her testimony in front of the Senate Education Committee in September, she spoke about several of the key components she is planning to include. Most likely, legislation will focus on low-income elementary age youth, partnering district and community organizations, requiring access to food, able to be used for transportation, including an enrichment or non-academic component and done in a non-competitive grant process.
Stay tuned for more information to come and please plan to attend our Afterschool & Summer Day at the Capitol on May 2nd, 2017 to help inform policy makers about this wonderful opportunity to further support families during the summer months.
