ARTICLE HEADING
Happy October!

We end each of our weekly staff meetings with celebrations and appreciations -- a way to recognize the positive impact someone has made to our community.  I'm writing this part of the newsletter to you all as we wrap up our 20th year BBQ celebration and plans are in full swing for the Harvest Fair on October 28. The ways in which you all contribute toward making CCDS a joyful learning environment is something I'd love to take a moment to celebrate. From greeting each other in the morning, welcoming new families, supporting field trips in many ways, attending our project exhibitions as curious audience members -- you each contribute to our culture in meaningful and impactful ways. Thank you!

As we head in to October, project work is getting into full swing. Projects are designed around an essential question -- something open-ended that allows for different access points, encourages inquiry, and interests students. During this work, students will often consult with experts in the field, complete field work to help inform their inquiry, and share their learning in unique and creative ways for an authentic audience at an exhibition. In a nutshell, Project Based Learning (PBL) asks us to facilitate deep, meaningful, joyful, purposeful work for our students. Below is a quick glance at the projects students are working on this fall:

Grade Level
Project Title
Essential Question(s)
K Eating the Alphabet How can we teach others about healthy food choices?
1 KIndness Project How can we spread kindness to others?
2 Matter that Matters How can 2nd graders make matter matter?

8 Science Misconceptions - Veritasium Project How can we use video to correct science misconceptions in the general public?

Below is a bit more information for families regarding the LCAP, safety drills, and the Chico Parade of Lights.

Learning Opportunities:    Here  is a resource titled "Charter Schools 101" from the California Charter School Association. In addition, the funding formulas for schools now are called the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF) and a portion of this is a supplemental grant called the Local Control Accountability Formula (LCAP). If you are interested in learning more, here is the  Guide to LCFF and LCAP.

Each year we gather parent, student and staff input and have meetings about our LCAP goals and progress. Please take this LCAP survey in October:

We have reviewed our safety protocols at the start of this new school year and run through drills and procedures with the students. In addition, on October 20, we will participate in the Great California ShakeOut, an earthquake and preparedness activity sponsored by the  Earthquake Country Alliance .

Last, but not  least , Chico Country Day School will be participating in the Chico Parade of Lights this year on October 15  at 7:30 p.m. The float is being created by the Middle School Leadership class with the help of PTP and will have musicians and singers playing "20 Years Strong." Students may walk alongside the float, but must have a parent accompany them.  Get out your CCDS swag, vintage or new, and join us in celebrating our 20th year. Look for the meeting time and place in our next e- flier .

In Appreciation,
Wendy and Colly

We had a great Safety Week! Thank you to Stuart Langford and the Chico Fire Dept. for their time!  The fire drill was especially amazing thanks to Fire Station 1.

Thank you to parent, Tara Johnson once again, for the awesome kindergarten mural!
The finished mural will soon be on display near the garden.

Sherri Elkins and Jamie Hawthorne are our amazing helpers during Picture Day.  We couldn't do it without them! Thank you!

Best turnout for a BBQ ever thanks to Stephanie Bolduc, her crew and CUSD. The BBQ was great and the price was right!

Measure K

On  November 8 , election day, Chico voters will have the opportunity to vote for Measure K. This is a School Bond Measure that, if passed, will provide funding for repairs and upgrades at schools throughout the district, with an emphasis on elementary schools. This bond is different from pervious bonds because it includes all public and
charter schools
within the Chico Unified boundaries. For more information, click here to go to CUSD website.

Have you filled out your
Free and Reduced Lunch Application?

L ast year's Free and Reduced Lunch eligibilities have expired.  If your child had free/reduced lunch last year and you have not filled out a new application, you will be charged full price for hot lunch.

Why is it important to fill this out this form? State funding of schools is based on the Local Control Funding Formula or LCFF. Part of this funding is a supplemental grant that uses our "unduplicated student" count which is Free and Reduced Lunch, English Language Learners and foster students. Therefore , it is important to get accurate numbers for this.

Click the link below to fill out a new application and drop off at the office. We will submit your form to Chico Unified.  If you have questions about your eligibility, contact the Nutrition Services Office at 891-3021 x203.

Halloween Parade

This year's Halloween Parade will take place directly after flag salute on Monday, October 31.

Student Costume Guidelines:  Costumes should be worn to school.  Please send an extra set of regular clothes. Make sure costumes are  comfortable, not scary with no blood and guts. Masks and weapons are not allowed.

A CHANCE to WIN $100,000

CCDS couldn't pass up an opportunity to win $100,000! The Center of Education Reform recently announced a contest called "Hey John Oliver! Back Off My Charter School", which came about after John Oliver, host of Last Week Tonight, made some "remarks" about charter schools. A video contest was created "to set the record straight."

Below is the "CCDS $100,000 video", which took a lot of time and effort to put together! A huge thank you to our Andi Jackson (CCDS Speech Therapist) and her videographer, Amie Parent (Special Ed Director), for heading up the creation of this special video.

A very special thank you to CCDS parents, Nathan and Jeannette Methvin-Terry for the many hours they worked on putting it together. You're awesome! More thanks to Staci Yamanishi and Dave Davis for filming, The winner will be announced on October 31.  Keep your fingers crossed. We could use $100,000!

School Directory Available

We are excited to announce that the 2016/2017 Parent Directory is now available and can be viewed directly from an App on your phone!

If you were a DirectorySpot user last year, then you don't need to do anything. Just log in with your username which is your current email and password.  You may need to reset your password. If you are unable to do this on your phone, please go to the website.

If you are a NEW user, you can download DirectorySpot for free from the App Store (iPhone users) or Google Play (Android users), or you can also access the data from the web.

We are going completely paperless this year! There will be no paper directories.  If you do not have a smart phone, you can access Directory Spot on your computer at DirectorySpot.net.   Once you are in the site, you will see "download PDF" on the left side.

If you have questions or need information added or changed in the directory, please contact Lisa Hoppe at 895-2650 X202.

Light Parade
This year's theme for the light parade is "Into the wild", and we have generously been loaned a flat bed trailer from White Ranch Events. Our middle school leadership class is working on the float design!  We are inviting all families, past and present, to come out and walk with their kids behind our float, singing the original CCDS theme song written by 5th grade teacher, Lorrie Mathews. We will be handing out glow necklaces to parade watchers. We will be updating the event page on Facebook as we get closer, but are looking for any and all glow necklace donations, the more the better! Let's light it up! #20yearsstrong

The Brick Campaign
Our amazing, much-anticipated brick campaign is almost here. The company we are working with is putting the final touches on our new brick "webstore," and it will be available soon. If you haven't already seen our gorgeous sample, you can stop by the office and check it out; and we will have it on display for the harvest fair!

News from the Music Program

The Music Room is looking for donations of small prizes that will be rewarded to classes when they achieve a certain number of points for excellent musicianship and citizenship.  In the past, small individually wrapped candy (e.g. Lemonheads, caramels, Hershey's kisses, Jolly Ranchers, etc.) has worked really well, but we're open to non-sugary treats too (erasers, pencils, rubber bouncy balls).  If you're in the vicinity of a bulk bin or a dollar store and feel inspired, please bring any offerings to the Music Room!  Thank you!

As most of our community knows by now, the Music Room has a new piano!  Over the summer we were given a beautiful 1884 Steinway grand piano.  Les Fredrickson, a retired Chico teacher (he taught social studies at Chico Junior and Chico Senior) offered this incredible gift to our school.  Please feel free to stop in and take a look, or come to an All School Sing to hear it in action!  As the school year progresses, we are hoping to have small student recitals for students who might want to share with each other a piece of music they've learned at home or in private lessons.  Stay tuned for dates and times.  Thank you, Mr. Fredrickson!

The Concert Choir/Musical class had a wonderful trip to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival this weekend!  We saw The Wiz (the Motown version of the Wizard of Oz) and had a blast exploring the beautiful town of Ashland, Oregon.  Thank you to all who donated, chaperoned, and drove on our trip!
