Mural to Be Unveiled at Anniversary Party

MuralWednesday, June 6, is the anniversary of the 1994 opening of Sedona Public Library on White Bear Road.  To celebrate this occasion, an anniversary party is being held from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. in the back courtyard at the Library.

Join us for refreshments and the unveiling of the new, 30-foot-long mural, which was designed and painted by Sedona Red Rock High School art students under the direction of muralist and library trustee Gary Rubin.

The four talented students who created the mural are Stacy Hernandez, Kelsey Smith, Luz Wallace, and Ismea Westerveld.  They have illustrated how great literature comes alive in the reader's mind.

The party will celebrate Sedona Public Library's growth and achievements over the decades, from its start with a few shelves of books in 1958, to its current collection of over 70,000 items. Click here for more information.

Multicultural Family Day

The Latino Services Department will present a special array of local musicians who will perform in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Join us on Saturday, June 16, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the Si Birch Community Room for an evening of family fun to honor parenthood!  Music will include Brazilian jazz and soft rock.  Refreshments will be provided.

Book Sale in the Village

Book saleMark your calendar for the book sale at the Village of Oak Creek Fire Station, next to the post office.  Preview night for Friends of the Library members and library volunteers is Thursday, June 21, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.  Book sale dates for the general public are June 22, 23, and 24 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Volunteer to help with the sale and you get first peek while you are working. We need help transporting tables, moving books from storage and setting them up, conducting the sale, repacking and moving leftover books, and returning tables to the main Library. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Cheryl Yeatts at 928-284-1603 or voc@sedonalibrary.org.

Summer Reading

The 2012 Centennial Summer Reading Program is designed to encourage youth of all ages to enjoy books during their summer vacation and to explore the state of Arizona. Registration is ongoing at Sedona Public Library, the Village of Oak Creek location, and online.

When you register, you will receive an Arizona Adventure Pass, providing discounted or free admission to many state attractions such as the Sedona Heritage Museum, Phoenix Zoo, and Lowell Observatory. You will also get to select surprise rewards and enter special drawings as you read your way through June and July. Some great summer events are planned as well. The Sedona Library Summer Reading Program funding is provided by Friends of the Sedona Library. More information and online registration are available here.

Book Discussion

Vanished ArizonaThe next community book discussion will be Monday, June 25, at 1:30 p.m. at Sedona Winds, 405 Jacks Canyon Road.  "Vanished Arizona: Recollections of the Army Life of a New England Woman," written by Martha Summerhayes, will be the focus of the book discussion. The book chronicles the author's experiences during the 1870s in Arizona.

Pick up your loaner copy of "Vanished Arizona" at Sedona Public Library in the Village, located in Tequa Marketplace, or download the book to your e-reader device from www.gutenberg.org.

Help Wanted

We have begun adding RFID tags to each of our 76,000 items. RFID stands for "radio frequency identification." Implementing RFID is our first step in bringing quick and easy self-checkout to the Library. (We will also continue to offer assisted checkout, staffed by our friendly and helpful library volunteers.)

If you are interested in helping with this project over the next couple of months, please contact us at volunteers@sedonalibrary.org or by calling 928-282-7714. The work involves using a barcode scanner to transfer information onto the tags and placing the tags in library books and other items. No computer or technical experience is necessary; standing, pushing a light cart, and repetitive motion are required tasks.

PlayawayWe just received a new shipment of Playaways! These preloaded audiobooks weigh only a couple of ounces and will fit in the palm of your hand.
