Day of the Dead Events
|
 - 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.: Bilingual story time and craft activity, celebrating the Day of the Dead, for ages 3 and up.
- 12 to 12:30 p.m.: Refreshments with pan de muerto (traditional sweet bread) and Mexican hot chocolate, for all ages.

Celebration of Native American Art and Culture
| A free special event, Celebration of Native American Art and Culture, is being held at Sedona Public Library on Sunday, November 10, from 2 to 5 p.m. This event will feature three programs, an exhibition of 40 Hopi quilts, several tribes displaying their artwork for sale, Native American music, and refreshments. A portion of the proceeds from any sales will be donated toward funding services at Sedona Library in the Village.
Scheduled speaker programs include:
- 2 p.m.: "Hopitutuqaiki Art School Activities," presented by artist Wilfred Kaye, former board member.
- 3 p.m.: "The Art of Traditional Flute Music," including a demonstration by David Wolfs Robe, flute maker, performer, and educator.
- 4 p.m.: "The Long Walk of the Navajo People," an Arizona Humanities Council program by author and speaker Evangeline Parsons Yazzie.

Hopi Quilt Exhibition and Lecture
|
Hopi quilts will be on display at Sedona Public Library from November 4 through November 30. Many of the quilts will be for sale, and a portion of sales will benefit Sedona Public Library in the Village.
On November 7 at 6 p.m., in the Si Birch Community Room, Carolyn O'Bagy Davis will present "Hopi Quilting: Stitched Traditions from an Ancient Community." The presenter is a quilt historian and the author of 10 books. She will have her books for sale. This program, which will also be held on November 6 at 1:30 p.m. at Sedona Winds in the Village of Oak Creek, is free and open to the public. |

Greetings Sedona community, my name is Pamela Espinosa de los Monteros. I am very pleased to join the Sedona Public Library team as the new Latino Services Librarian.
As a Mexican-American growing up in San Diego, California, I relied on the resources at the public library, which played an important role in my academic and professional development. I first chose to pursue a career in librarianship while completing a Fulbright Garcia Robles Fellowship in Mexico City, Mexico, where I observed frequent challenges stemming from cross-cultural information exchange. I pursued graduate studies in Library and Information Science at Syracuse University in New York State. There, I recognized the cultural differences that exist within countries, as they do across borders.
In addition to traveling throughout Latin America, I have spent six years working in not-for-profit programming. Throughout my career, I have focused on creating opportunities for cross-cultural dialogue and understanding. I now hope to continue developing relevant library programming that will support our Latino community, and would also like to invite the Sedona community at large to learn about and participate in Latino culture.
Please keep an eye out for Latino cultural events at the Library, such as the upcoming celebration of the Day of the Dead/D�a de los Muertos, the Latino Film Series offered the first Monday of every month, ESL classes, and much more.
I am excited to join the Sedona community and look forward to seeing you at the Library!

November Movies at the Library
|
 Each Monday night in November, the Flicker Shack film series will present a free movie at 6 p.m. in the Si Birch Community Room. Latino Services will screen the Mexican heist movie " Ladr�n Que Roba a Ladr�n" ("To Rob a Thief") on November 4. " The Music Never Stopped," a film about the healing power of music, is the selection for November 11. Teens and adults are invited to attend the November 18 movie, " The Perks of Being a Wallflower," adapted from the best-selling coming-of-age novel. A Beirut beauty salon is the setting for the film that will be shown on November 25, a romantic comedy from Lebanon entitled " Caramel." |

New Internet Computers
| Next time you're at the Library, try one of our new Internet computers. We recently replaced 16 of our Windows XP computers with faster Windows 7 all-in-one machines. Featuring 23-inch monitors, the new computers offer Microsoft Office 2010 programs like Word and Excel, plus Internet access, printing, and web cameras. The larger screens are ideal for watching DVDs!

Library Events in the Village

- Rotating Artist Program: Sedona Public Library in the Village will display "Healing Quilts for Kids" beginning Tuesday, November 12. These quilts, created by the Red Rock Quilters, will be donated to kids who attend Camp Soaring Eagle. An artists' reception will be held Wednesday, November 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. For only $1.00, you may purchase a raffle ticket to win a quilt of your choice. Raffle tickets will be available for purchase at SPL or SPL-V. Proceeds from this raffle will benefit SPL-V and Camp Soaring Eagle.

Arizona Humanities Council Program: Carolyn O'Bagy Davis will present "Hopi Quilting: Stitched Traditions from an Ancient Community" on Wednesday, November 6, at 1:30 p.m. at Sedona Winds, 405 Jacks Canyon Road. The presenter is a quilt historian and the author of 10 books. She will have her books for sale. This program is free and open to the public. Donations are welcome!
Following the presentation, pick up your loaner copy of "Animal Dreams" to prepare for the community book discussion on Monday, December 16. This book is also available in large print. Please call the Library to reserve your copy.
