This past Friday, Sept. 30, was the 40th anniversary of the passage of the Hyde Amendment. Named in honor of Congressman Henry Hyde, the Hyde Amendment prevents government funds from directly paying for abortion-on-demand through programs such as Medicaid.
Make no mistakes, the Hyde Amendment has saved lives over the past 40 years. A recent estimate shows that 60,000 abortions are prevented each year by the Hyde Amendment's presence. We are grateful for the 2.4 million people alive today due to the protection of the Hyde Amendment.
Sadly, the Hyde Amendment is in the crosshairs today. Planned Parenthood and Hillary Clinton have both expressed their commitment to deleting the Hyde Amendment.

Black Advocates
Hosting Event
in Bossier City
The Hosea Project and Louisiana Black Advocates for Life will visit the Shreveport-Bossier area Tuesday night in its first stop on a statewide tour. The groups will host Truth Matters from 6-9 p.m. at Praise Temple of Bossier City. The event is being held in conjunction with National Night Out Against Crime events in the area.
The event will feature family entertainment, door prizes, and information on a number of topics, including Medicaid expansion, healthy eating habits, adoption and other alternatives to abortion, HIV testing, and real estate.

St. Tammany RTL Hosting Breakfast
St. Tammany Right to Life is hosting a breakfast on Saturday, Oct. 8, beginning at 9 a.m. The event will be held at the Knights of Columbus Hall's Magnolia Room, 1578 West Hall Ave., Slidell.
Abby Shields, executive director of Danielle Inn in Covington, and Casey Schallenberg, an inspirational speaker, will both speak at the event. Pro-life activities planned by the group will also be discussed.

Choose Life License Plate Program Helps Women Considering Adoption

Please consider taking a few minutes today to make the switch! For each Choose Life license plate issued by the state of Louisiana, $25 goes to agencies working with mothers considering adoption for their unborn child. And, contrary to popular belief, you do not need to wait until your vehicle registration expires!
The Louisiana Choose Life License Plate program, managed by Louisiana Right to Life, has distributed more than $377,000 to pro-life pregnancy centers, adoption agencies and other family organizations since its inception in 1999. A lawsuit filed by the New York Center for Reproductive Law and Policy to stop distribution of the plate tied things up for much of that time until 2006, when the Louisiana Department of Motor Vehicles began selling all specialty plates again, including the Choose Life plate. And thanks to the sale of those plates since then, grants have been awarded regularly since 2008.
That year, 10 agencies split $20,000. In 2016, 26 qualifying agencies received grants totaling $36,400.

According to state law, 50 percent of the money organizations receive must be used to provide for the material needs of expectant mothers considering adoption, such as clothing, housing, medical care, food, utilities and transportation. The remaining money can be used for counseling, training and providing pregnancy testing.

"In January 2016 we were contacted by a potential birth mother whose family had forced her to leave the family home due to her pregnancy. We provided some emergency funds for her to have temporary lodging and food while she considered her plans and tried to work things out with her family. Ultimately she did decide to place for adoption, and getting some distance from her parents allowed them all to discuss the situation and work together toward a solution."
Catholic Charities/ACCESS:
"Leslie began coming to ACCESS early in her pregnancy for a pregnancy test and ultrasound. We continued providing case management services, and upon her fifth month of pregnancy she indicated she was considering adoption for her unborn baby. She began receiving counseling services and was provided with material support. She ultimately chose a family to adopt her little girl, and through her open adoption, keeps in touch with them through visits, email and photos."

"Amber was 16 and unsure what she wanted to do. Her family was encouraging her to raise the child, telling her they would help. Amber wasn't willing to do that, but she knew she couldn't raise the baby alone, either. Amber then decided she would look into placing the child for adoption. We were able to ensure that Amber had needed maternity clothing, personal hygiene items, nutritious snacks and bus passes to her OB appointments. Amber delivered a healthy baby and later that week placed him for adoption. She recently visited us and had a copy of her high school diploma. She was excited to be going to college."

Residents Stand for Life at Local Life Chains
Life Chains took place across Louisiana Saturday and Sunday. Local residents stood side by side in solidarity with the unborn praying for an end to abortion and spreading the pro-life message along Louisiana roadways. At least 14 events were held over the weekend in all parts of the state. Another event is planned in Thibodaux on Oct. 30 from 2-3 p.m. at First Street and Canal Boulevard.
