Make Hay While the Sun Shines... with the Chamber
Dana Bottorff
G.T. Reilly & Company
The Massachusetts economy is the best in the nation, according to Governing magazine, a periodical for local government leaders. The magazine recently ranked Massachusetts' economy as the strongest in the nation, based on six criteria:
  1.       State unemployment rate
  2.       One-year improvement in the state
        unemployment rate
  3.       Per capita state GDP in 2015
  4.       Percent change in real state GDP,
        2014 to 2015
  5.       Percent change in personal income per capita
  6.       Year-to-date increase in jobs for 2016
While the economic recovery has not reached everyone - even in Massachusetts - these numbers are good news for Bay State businesses and individuals alike.

This is a time for business owners to make investments in people, equipment, marketing - whatever moves the dial. As they say, you've gotta make hay while the sun shines. And the Chamber can help.
The Chamber is a convener of business people, a place where ideas are exchanged, referrals are made and resources can be tapped. Looking for a consultant to help your business get to the next level? A vendor to provide needed equipment? A training program to provide quality new hires?
Chances are, you can find those resources in the Chamber membership, or you can find other Chamber members who can recommend vendors, resources and strategies that have worked for them. Moreover, the Chamber's relationships with state agencies and small business support organizations can help you tap into sources of help you may not have known existed.

If you're a Chamber member looking for help to boost your business to the next level, reach out to the Chamber for help. Tom O'Rourke would be happy to have a conversation with you. And if you know of a business that isn't a Chamber member yet, share the news with them about the Chamber's resources.

The sun is shining, and it's time to make hay!

Meet the Board: Todd Chipman
John T. Chipman & Company LLP

Name: Todd Chipman, MST

Company: John T. Chipman & Company LLP, Certified Public Accountants

Occupation: Accountant

Years in current position: 10

What town do you live in?  Norfolk

Where did you grow up? Norfolk

What is the most enjoyable part of your job?
Assisting individuals and business owners in a variety of industries, with all types of financial, technical and operational matters.

Please share any personal history or background.
I currently work for John T. Chipman & Company LLP, a CPA firm my father founded. Unfortunately, a few months after graduating from college and starting my career at JTC &Co., my father unexpectedly passed away - so we were only able to work together for a short while. I am very close with my mom and sister. My sister and her husband have two boys (ages two and four) who I thoroughly enjoy spoiling. After graduating college I focused on work and family and a few years ago I decided to go back to school to receive my Master's Degree in Taxation from Bryant University. Going nights, I completed the program in three years, graduated in the top of my class with honors, and received one of only three awarded graduate school lifetime memberships into the International Honors Society of Beta Gamma Sigma.

What is something that most people wouldn't know about you?
I am actually a big "do-it-yourselfer." The more tools, yard equipment and projects - the better.

If you weren't doing your current job you would be doing what?
I honestly do not know. It would most certainly be in a service-based industry. Maybe law.

What does the Chamber mean to you?
To me, the Chamber is an invaluable venue for local business and entrepreneurs to meet, share and facilitate positive local change.

What is your favorite spot in the Neponset Valley region?
Easy, Patriot Place.

Canton: I-95/Dedham Street Interchange Construction Moves Forward
The Massachusetts Department of Transportation Board of Directors has approved a $44.2 million contract with SPS New England to reconstruct the I-95/Dedham Street Interchange in Canton and three bridges.

The project will improve access to the Route 128 Commuter Rail Station and the University Station development and increase safety for pedestrians and bicyclists.

As part of the work, a new off-ramp will be constructed from I-95 northbound to Dedham Street in Canton, which will complete the half-diamond interchange at that location. This direct access from I-95 northbound will reduce traffic on residential roads.

The bridge carrying Dedham Street over I-95 will be replaced with a structure that includes five travel lanes and allow for an exclusive left-turn lane from Dedham Street westbound to the existing I-95 southbound on-ramp.

The bridge carrying Dedham Street over I-95 will be replaced with a structure that includes five travel lanes and allow for an exclusive left-turn lane from Dedham Street westbound to the existing I-95 southbound on-ramp. Dedham Street itself will be widened from its existing two travel lanes to four travel lanes between Kirby Drive in Canton to a point west of the Neponset River in Norwood/Westwood, a distance of approximately 3,800 feet. This work will include widening the bridge over the Neponset River and the bridge over the MBTA/Amtrak railroad tracks to accommodate the two additional traffic lanes.

The project will also include intersection improvements at Shawmut Road and the construction of a sidewalk along the project's length. Five-foot shoulders will also be constructed to accommodate bicycles.
New traffic signals will be installed along Dedham Street at the intersection with the southbound onramp, northbound off-ramp and Shawmut Road. These traffic signals will improve traffic flow in the area and promote increased pedestrian and vehicle safety.

"I would like to thank the MassDOT Board members for approving this major construction contract that will allow us to continue investing in key multi-modal transportation infrastructure projects," said MassDOT CEO & Secretary of Transportation Stephanie Pollack.
MassDOT Highway Administrator Thomas J. Tinlin highlighted the benefits drivers will see after the project is complete.

"Once complete, this project will have major benefits for drivers, including easier access to Dedham Street and safer travel routes for bicyclists," said Administrator Tinlin. "This is another example of MassDOT making critical infrastructure improvements to benefit all modes of transportation."
