Here's the latest news from San Diego and Imperial County community colleges during the month of September.
Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District
Cuyamaca College is receiving a $6 million grant over five years to boost the number of Hispanic students in science, technology, engineering mathematics who transfer to the California State University and University of California systems.

Five instructors at Grossmont and Cuyamaca colleges have been selected by their peers as the academic year's best faculty members. The honorees were lauded at fall convocations for exemplary service to the East County campuses.
Imperial Valley College
Imperial Valley College, in partnership with the county office of education and other institutions, has been a leader in the development of Imperial County's annual Higher Education week. This year, 25 colleges participated in the event at the Imperial Valley Mall.
MiraCosta College
Out of 1,655 community colleges in the United States, MiraCosta College ranked number three in Rate My Professors' 2015-2016 Highest-Rated Junior and Community College List .

MiraCosta College has launched a comprehensive television and digital ad campaign called, "Why I Chose MiraCosta" to broaden awareness of various college programs while highlighting various elements that make the college a great choice for students who want to begin or continue their higher education journey. The three ads feature a nursing student, an award-winning music student and a military veteran majoring in biology and math.

Palomar College
Last winter, just six months after retiring from a nine-year Army career, Bies found himself without a job or a home and living in his car. With the help of a new program run by  Easterseals Southern California, he quickly got back on his feet. He has a new apartment and a full-time job, and is enrolled in Palomar College's nursing program.

Rosie, who entered foster care at the age of three is now 24, is now a communications major at Palomar College with three years of experience already as a mental health counselor at a local high school. Her future is bright. She credits Dawna, her C.A.S.A. volunteer, for empowering her.

Palomar College officials held a Grand Opening Ceremony for the new Early Childhood Education Lab School on the College's San Marcos campus. Palomar's new Superintendent/President, Dr. Joi Lin Blake officiated at the ceremony. After a program of speakers and a ribbon-cutting, guests were given tours of the new facility.
San Diego Community College District
More than 2,100 San Diego high school students are taking classes at City, Mesa and Miramar colleges this semester, four times above last fall's figure, the San Diego Community College District announced today.
San Diego City College
On Aug. 25, San Diego Community College District renewed its largest contract, $1.33 million, to provide City College instructors at Naval Station Great Lakes in Illinois.
