Summer 2016                                                 Vol. 9

As we enjoy the summer months and prepare for a busy Fall, we would like to thank all our supporters for their continued commitment to the Windsor Cancer Research Group's vision: A united community bridging cutting edge research with world-class cancer care.

IMPACT REPORT RELEASED

WCRG has released its first Impact Report showcasing our progress from 2012-2015. The Report provides an overview of WCRG - the mission, vision and values as well as the committee members who keep WCRG moving forward. We provide the numbers, including a detailed budget, that shows where we started and how far we have come. We thank our dedicated WCRG members who have volunteered their time in creating this report.

WCRG RESEARCHER SNAPDSHOT

WCRG has recently partnered with snapd Windsor to highlight our WCRG cancer researchers through a new feature called "WCRG Researcher Snapdshot". Interviews will be found in the print edition of snapd Windsor and shared through various newsletters and announcements. The goal of these "Snapdshots" is to raise awareness about the cancer research conducted in Windsor-Essex and stimulate new research collaborations.

WCRG IN THE COMMUNITY

Thanks to our Volunteer Committee, we shared information on cancer research at the University of Windsor's Research Showcase and Science Rendezvous. We also hosted a cancer biology workshop for forty youth members of Windsor's refugee and immigrant community. Students participated in interactive activities viewing cancer tissue slides and learning about different types of cancer treatments and research.

We also partnered with the pediatric oncology unit at Windsor Regional Hospital to host the Pediatric Parent Support Seminar to a group of parents whose children are undergoing treatment. Thank you to Dr. Mohammed Jarrar and Dr. Lisa Porter for being our guest speakers and to our dedicated student volunteers for educating the children and their families about cancer research!  In February, Dr. Luis Rueda and Dr. Dora Cavallo-Medved shared the findings of their latest collaborative research project with the Windsor Essex Prostate Cancer Support Group. Their talk focused on the importance of multi-disciplinary studies in leading to new discoveries.

WCRG participated in the Cancer Education Days, organized by the Windsor Regional Cancer Program for primary care providers, with a focus on hematology and lung cancer. Many of our WCRG members presented at the event.
BUILDING RESEARCH COLLABORATIONS
WCRG has developed a new Cancer Research Think Tank series that brings people together to share research ideas in an effort to build collaborative projects and increase the number of cancer research grant submissions. Over 50 researchers from a variety of disciplines and institutions have participated so far. The next Think Tank is scheduled for October 14th.

It will be a busy Fall with WCRG hosting our 3rd Biennial International Cancer Research Conference at Caesars Windsor. We are excited to welcome our two distinguished keynote speakers to Windsor: Dr. Elizabeth Eisenhauer, MD FRCPC, Queen's University, Kingston General Hospital and Dr. Shoukat Dedhar, PhD, University of British Columbia, British Columbia Cancer Agency
