President's Message
Marshall Vann, MAI, SRA
SC Chapter President

Another football season is here and I am looking forward to those cool crisp fall evenings. Hopefully your shops are busy.  It seems just a short time ago that I was working with Suzanne trying to figure out a schedule for our fall joint meeting in Savannah last year. Another year has come and gone and we are headed to Fripp to bring Allen McCravy, MAI, in as our new up and coming 2017 President.

Unfortunately Kit McIntyre, MAI, has resigned from her elected 2016 Vice President and 2017 President elect position. Robin Griffin, SRA, AI-RRS, has also resigned from her elected 2016-2018 Director position.  Both of these resignations are unfortunate and our Chapter will miss their leadership skills and their time devoted to our Chapter's growth. Kit's decision was certainly a difficult one for her to make but one that she felt necessary at this time. I respect her decision and certainly hope that she will be able to get back to a leadership position at a later date. Kit and Robin thank you for your service and for your help to me over the last two years. We will all miss Kit and Robin and would hope to see them at our quarterly meetings.

On September 7, 2016, we called a special meeting to discuss the Officer and Director positions that were recently vacated. On September12, 2016, the SCCAI Nominating Committee proposed 2nd Vice President Allen McCravy, MAI, to be the 2016 Vice President and 2017 President of our Chapter. I look forward to working with Allen next year in my new role as immediate past president.   Past president Joe Woods, SRA, was proposed to fill our 2016-2018 Director vacancy. Our Chapter will benefit from Joe's past Chapter leadership and we look forward to having him back in a leadership role.

This year has been great and I have enjoyed working with the Board members, committee chairs, committee members, and directors. I have enjoyed meeting and conversing with the new SCCAI Members who have completed the requirements to become designated. At every meeting I have had the privilege of presenting designation certificates to new members.  Since our last meeting Ken Lavertu, Jr. was awarded his SRA designation while Robert McGahey, III from Mt. Pleasant received his MAI designation from the Appraisal Institute. Congratulations to both of you. This makes 7 new designated members for 2016.

For a football team, the key to long term success is recruitment. Much like a football team recruitment is necessary for our Chapter to have long term success. This year we are pleased to have new SRA Candidates, new Review Designation Candidates, new Practicing Affiliates, and transferees from other Chapters. I look forward to meeting more new members, candidates, and affiliates next year. Despite all the news we hear about declining membership, the SCCAI is working to keep our Chapter strong and active.

New members mean new leadership and leadership starts with LDAC. Leadership Development and Advisory Council is the first step toward getting involved with Chapter Leadership and government relations on a local and national level. Please fill out our Leadership Resource Registry form and let us know where your interests lie.  This is the best way to let your Board of Directors know that you want to get involved and make a difference in our Chapter.

Many thanks to Jody Bishop, MAI, SRA, for his efforts and success in keeping our Chapter visible at the National level. Immediate Past President Karl Finkelstein, MAI, and Jake Knight, MAI, continue to support our position in the ongoing AMC Legislation battle. Jody Odom, MAI, AI-GRS, was chosen by Region IX to serve on their Nominating Committee and Ralph Griffin, MAI, AI-GRS, was the r ecipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award during the Appraisal Institute Annual Conference in Charlotte.  Suzanne Brockway is doing a great job as our Executive Director. She is up to date with National policies and procedures and she continues to do an amazing job organizing our quarterly meetings and keeping everything in place throughout the year. I simply could not have done it without Suzanne. Her service to our Chapter is greatly appreciated.

Serving as President for the SCCAI last year was an experience that I will not forget. It has been an honor to represent the SCCAI Chapter in that capacity. I have met so many interesting people on a local and national level that I never would have otherwise. The meetings, the conference calls, the discussions with Board members, and the decisions that have to be made have been taxing at times.  Now that my year as President is ending I reflect on all of it to conclude that there are some awesome participants in our Chapter that give so much of their time and talent for the good of the Chapter. As members of this Chapter the past and current leaders are to be commended for their efforts. We have an awesome leadership chain following me and I assure you the entire Board of Directors will work to grow the membership with good qualified professionals to make this Chapter the best.

Lastly I cannot help but to continue to emphasize how much we want your participation at our quarterly meetings and educational offerings. It is so important for the members to get involved and network with each other in person. Personal interaction with each other is what makes our Chapter grow and continue to be successful and financially sound.

This year our fall meeting will be at Fripp Island and this time of year at the beach is great. Jim Amorin, MAI, SRA, AI-GRS, of Austin, Texas, is the 2016 National AI president-elect and 2017 president. Jim will be the master of ceremonies to bring Allen McCravy, MAI, in as our 2017 President. I would encourage participation from not only individual members but from the entire family for this fun filled weekend. I hope to see you there. As Immediate Past President I look forward to working with Allen, the current Board Members, and our newest board member Eric Goodwin, MAI.

The mission of the Appraisal Institute is to advance professionalism and ethics, global standards, methodologies, and practices through the professional development of property economics worldwide.
Let's keep this in mind as we work together to advance and improve the appraisal practice!

All the Best,

Marshall Vann, MAI, SRA

Continuing Education
The Appraisal Institute and the South Carolina Real Estate Appraisers Board have approved 4 hours of continuing education credit for the " Forest Valuation for Non-Foresters, Part II seminar.  100% attendance of classroom time is required to receive credit.

About the Seminar
The purpose of this seminar is to enable the appraiser who has no forestry background to be able to comply with the Competency Rule of USPAP. The information contained in this seminar should help the appraiser to understand the issues he/she will be exposed to when valuing forestland.  It will also allow the appraiser to converse intelligently with a forester in case the project requires the assistance of a professional with forestry expertise.

A breif overview on important concepts from part 1 will include additional material covering new forestry terms important to forest valuation work, the importance of the forest management plan, and how the three approaches to value can be used appropriately in forestland valuation. We will also employ two case studies to demonstrate the techniques involved in appraising a foresterd property with a HBU of timber production and a forested property with a HBU of residential development
