St. Michael's Academy
  :

This week at St. Michael's Academy we had a very special creation prayer service. As you know, Pope Francis recently released an encyclical discussing the importance of taking care of our environment and helping to preserve God's many beautiful creations.

On Tuesday, in conjunction with the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, our entire student body, along with faculty and staff, gathered at Nathan Bill Park. We thanked God for his creations with prayer and song. We asked His blessing for the hundreds of bulbs students were about to plant around the school. All students were assigned a buddy for both planting and when not planting, drawing pictures of the many pieces of nature they observed.

Excitement will surely grow as spring approaches and the students anxiously await the outcome of their plantings!

Enjoy a restful weekend. Try spend some time outside and appreciate the splendor of the fall with your family. Take a moment to thank God for the beautiful world that surrounds us.

Peace,

Ann E. Dougal
Principal

d For Thought

The vocation of being a "protector", however, is not just something involving us Christians alone; it also has a prior dimension which is simply human, involving everyone. It means protecting all creation, the beauty of the created world, as the Book of Genesis tells us and as Saint Francis of Assisi showed us. It means respecting each of God's creatures and respecting the environment in which we live.

The Feast of St. Francis

Thankful for God's Creations

On Tuesday of this week we celebrated the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi in a special way. As we all know, St. Francis cared deeply for animals and the environment. To honor St. Francis and to follow the Pope's encyclical to take care of our environment, the faculty, staff and students of St. Michael's held a very special prayer service.

The entire school gathered over at Nathan Bill Park and asked God to bless our earth and specifically the hundreds of bulbs that the students were about to plant. They then "buddied up" and took turns planting the bulbs along the Eddywood Street side of the school. When the students were not planting, they were with their buddy drawing pictures of the many aspects of nature. It was a wonderful reminder of God's beautiful creations and the need to do our part in taking care of them.

This will be the first part of a multi-segmented, multi-seasonal event at St. Michael's Academy where the students will walk in Pope Francis's footsteps in taking care of our earth.

From The Classroom of Ms. Velez - Spanish

Saludos!

We are in the initial stages of the 2016-2017 SPANISH READING
ADVENTURE. We have started working with basic vocabulary
and grammar skills as we keep incorporating conversational
skills in our dialogues. It is with a great sense of excitement that,
after putting God first in our weekly lessons, our elementary grade
level students have discovered that they can just transfer their english
reading skills into spanish and start experiencing this SPANISH READING
ADVENTURE.

It is our hope that all students may feel comfortable with this new reading
approach and begin embracing this experience as a blessing from God.  Like  always, every week we try to live and manage ourselves with a sense of self  control as we invest time and energy into learning Spanish.

Paz y bendiciones para todos (Peace and blessings for you all),

Sra. Velez

SchoolsNEXT

Great Job Team!

As reported in last week's Messenger, this year's Schools NEXT international competition was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Four of our SMA graduates, Cameron Dougal, Conor Sears, Julia Puppolo, and Jasmine Nieves presented to a panel of 12 national and international judges last Thursday morning.

This year, the students were tasked with building the "PERFECT" classroom.  Opting for a traditional approach, CJ2 included a variety of green technologies, space saving ideas and a handicapped accessible wheel chair lift for a classroom stage.  Competing against groups both nationally and internationally this year's team placed 4th.

The Schools NEXT project is a project based learning activity 8th graders at St. Michael's participate in as a summary activity to all they have learned through their academic years.  A new theme is provided each year and children are tasked with researching, designing, building, and presenting their group based projects.  This showcase activity demonstrates what we can do here at SMA.  An educational task such as this engages the whole child: incorporating creative thinking, group problem solving abilities, presentation presence, and all of the academic and technological skills they possess.

Congratulations to the St. Michael's Academy 2016 Schools NEXT team and thank you for showing what an investment in the hearts and minds of tomorrows leaders can produce.

CSI Comes To St. Michael's!

 Crime Scene Investigation

Sr. Melinda Pellerin, SSJ, will bring her exciting and multi-faceted crime scene investigative program to the 8th grade of St. Michael's Academy. Overr the next five weeks, students will learn about the proper method of investigating a crime scene, fingerprinting, hair and fiber analysis, firearm and bullet analysis and blood splatter analysis. They will learn how the time of the crime is established, conduct outdoor investigations and see how suspects are determined.

There will be guest speakers from the Springfield and Ludlow Police Departments, a panel discussion with recovering addicts, a K-9 police unit, and a guest speaker from the Sheriff's Department.

Students will learn the "science" necessary to solve a mystery. They will simulate forensic testing in their classroom. They will learn that solving a crime is an integrated activity which includes many fields of study including physics/math, reading, and social studies. Equally important, is the development and use of critical thinking skills.

Stayed tuned to the Messenger for updates and to eventually find out who is arrested for this crime!

Gr. 5 Science

Atoms Spotted in Gr. 6

Sr. Constance had many atoms floating around her 5th grade science class this week.

Olivia DePace explains about her sulfur atom. "Sulfur is a metal atom and when it burns, it emits a blue flame. Also 16 is it's lucky number because it has 16 electrons, 16 neutrons and 16 protons!

Student Writing Gallery

Student Writing Gallery

Have you checked out our Student Writing Gallery?  Currently, we have math autobiographies from Mrs. McQuade's  fifth grade math class.  Mrs. McQuade asked her students to think about their life in relationship to their math skills.  How has it developed thus far into their school career?  The results were an honest, creative reflection of each student's life as a math learner.

Our third grade students are Wild About SMA!  The pieces they wrote prove it.   Check out the Student Writing Gallery under Student Life on the SMA Web page and see if you agree.

School Counselor Office

Lunch Bunch!

Lunch bunch will be starting this month. It is a small, informal group session designed to build self-esteem, social skills and increase peer relations. These groups are held during the students' lunch block. Students bring their lunches to my office where they listen to stories, have discussions and participate in activities. This is a great way to meet with all of the students at SMA and for them to get to know me and what my job is.

Some of the different topics we might touch on are kindness, friendship, careers, mindfulness, emotions, and self-confidence. A special invitation is sent to a small group of students in the class. Students are chosen at random and all students will have a chance to participate throughout the year. The students are picked up after their recess and then dropped off at the cafeteria for the end of their lunch block.

The students who participated last year really enjoyed their lunch bunch and have been asking when I will start! I have many ideas and plans for this year!

More details and reminders about the event will follow!

Car Lines

Please Use Patience!

We wanted to remind parents that ALL vehicles must follow the car line rules and take their place at the END of the line when picking up or dropping off their child.

There have been reports of vehicles bypassing all the cars waiting in line and cutting to the front of the line. This is not fair to all the parents that have been following the rules and waiting patiently.

We have also received numerous phone calls from our neighbors asking vehicles to slow down.

Let's make sure we set a good example for our students.  Thank you!

And we pray in a special way for our recently departed:

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

Please remember to keep Miss Brown in your prayers during this difficult time for her. She will be taking an indefinite medical leave of absence.

Our prayers continue to be with Mr. Rancitelli, who is undergoing treatment for a cancer recurrence. We also ask that you keep Mrs. Rancitelli in your prayers as well.
