Saturday Bird Walk - Bird Count - Nov 21, 2015
Sunny and chilly. 15-30°F. 0-4 mph. 5 participants.

This morning was the first winter bird walk of the season! I even wore a hat! We had the fortune of being amongst two groups of chickadees this morning. Read more about them in the Bird of the Day section.

Bird of the Day:  Ruby-Crowned Kinglet - Regulus calendula

One thing to pay attention to in the late fall and early winter are flocks of chickadees because

other species associate with chickadees. Nuthatches, creepers, downy woodpeckers, yellow-rumped warblers, and our Bird of the Day the ruby-crowned kinglet all can be found with chickadee flocks in the first half of the winter. You can spot a kinglet in a group of chickadees by paying attention to how the birds move. Kinglets will often flutter briefly as they move about, whereas chickadees also move quickly, but they are more direct in their movements.
