October 6, 2016

The annual fall Phonathon is just a week away and while our volunteer callers will not be looking for your vote, they will be inviting you to join thousands of supporters who remember CJ each year through a gift to the Annual Fund.

Your contributions through Phonathon go directly to assisting all students and providing Chaminade Julienne with resources to maintain its excellent educational programs.

A call from a Phonathon volunteer is also an opportunity to hear from  enthusiastic volunteers who want to share their love of CJ and their gratitude for your gift.

During the 12 Days of Phonathon, starting on October 16, we pledge to do the following:
  • Make our 15,000 calls with courtesy and brevity;
  • Get you back to your favorite TV show within 5 minutes;
  • Share why we love CJ if you want to hear more;
  • Handle your gift securely;
  • And thank you for making an investment in Catholic education and positively changing lives.
Through the investment of our dedicated faculty, staff, alumni, parents and community friends, our collective giving allows CJ to be a leader in Catholic education and enables us to embrace our mission to work for justice, value all people and serve as models of faith in action at all times.

During this election year, we realize your phone may ring more than usual. When you get a call during the 12 Days of Phonathon, please know a caring voice will be on the other end and that your support truly makes a difference.

OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT

As a school community, we believe it essential to regularly consider how we might strengthen the Catholic educational experience for our students. When we do this, we seek input from our parents and students that helps us celebrate areas of strength and identify things that may need to be improved. For example, last year, we asked parents and students to complete surveys as part of our accreditation process through the Ohio Catholic School Accreditation Association. The insights we gained from that survey have assisted our faculty and staff to identify goals and strategies in the areas of faith development and academic achievement.

This year, our Board of Trustees, made up of 19 community volunteers who guide our policies and keep our focus on long-term viability, has embarked on a process to consider how the next set of goals and strategies might be prioritized and resourced over the next three to five years. The Trustees have retained Independent School Management (ISM), the largest independent school advisory firm in the country, to assist in the process. Their help includes administering a survey that includes parents, students, faculty and staff.

In next week's issue of Parent Weekly, we will share an online link to the parent survey.  Because your responses go directly to a secure server at ISM, individual responses will remain confidential. CJ leadership and Trustees will be provided with summary data only, along with any recommendations ISM may have based on the findings.

When you receive the link next week, I hope you will take the time to provide candid and confidential feedback. God bless you.

Sincerely,

Dan Meixner '84
President

Graduation Requirements for the
Classes of 2018 and Beyond
There have been many changes in recent years regarding high school graduation requirements in Ohio. The biggest changes are those regarding graduation tests. These changes began with the class of 2018 and will continue for future classes. CJ has been diligently learning about and preparing the students for these changes.  On Wednesday, Oct. 19, our principal and assistant principal, John Marshall and Steve Fuchs, will explain the graduation requirements to parents in a presentation during the break time in parent-teacher conferences (4-5 p.m.). You are invited to attend this presentation to learn more about the requirements. There will be a repeat of this presentation from 7-8 p.m. for those unable to attend the earlier one. Both presentations will take place in the gym.

MINISTRY & SERVICE

From the Chaplain's Office
Next Wednesday, Oct. 12, we will celebrate an All School Liturgy.  It is the Feast of Our Lady of the Pillar. This title of Mary goes back to an ancient tradition from Zaragoza, Spain, where a basilica and shrine dedicated to Mary were erected.  It was in this same city and its basilica that Blessed Chaminade was inspired to begin the Marianist Family.  He is quoted as saying, "As I once saw you in Zaragoza, so I see you today."  Many people think that he - not unlike St. Julie - received some sort of "vision" where he "saw" his future religious family.  CJ is blessed to be a part of this legacy that continues along with the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.  All are welcome to join our school community for this Eucharistic celebration.

Marianist News
This weekend, Marianist Brother Sean Downing will be ordained a priest for the Society of Mary. Bro. Sean was a religion teacher at CJ several years ago. He completed his seminary studies in Rome, and is currently ministering in San Antonio, Texas. Please join us in praying for Bro. Sean as he takes on this new role of following Jesus Christ who came to serve and not be served (cf. Mt 20:28).
