Saturday, February 7, 2015 Bird Walk

Our recent warm weather has opened up a lot of water. All the ducks have moved back onto smaller ponds from the larger reservoirs like Valmont and Boulder. It was great to see large numbers of waterfowl all spread across the water. See the slide show for group shots of Cottonwood Marsh.

American Wigeon

  American Wigeon

One of my favorite kleptoparasites is the American Wigeon. If you are wondering, a kleptoparasite is an organism that steals food from another. Usually, I see wigeons stealing food from coots, but I have observed them taking food away from many species, often other ducks. However, this morning the wigeons were all foraging for themselves. Perhaps, a great wave of industriousness has overtaken the wigeon population or perhaps, there weren't any coots to take advantage of?  Anyway, they are fun and beautiful to watch even when they aren't pestering other birds.
