News for teachers of Chinese in PA
CLTNet Newsletter October 2016

CLTNet of PA is an initiative spearheaded by the Center for Advanced Language Proficiency Education and Research (CALPER) at the Pennsylvania State University. The goal of the initiative is to support teachers of Chinese by establishing a network of educators in our state and by functioning as a hub for quality resources. Team members are: Sue Calvin (Berks IU), Deborah Roney (Juniata College), Michelle Saylor (Bellefonte SD), Wen-hua Du (Penn State).

Four times a year - October, February, April, June - we will publish a newsletter that informs you about professional events for teachers, PA news related to Chinese language, and teaching and learning resources. We are using a mail service to reach you. To make sure that our quarterly CLTNet Newsletter arrives in your inbox, please add us to your address book or contact list.

CALPER and CLTNet of PA are projects funded by the U.S. Department of Education and in no way affiliated with any commercial business. As a national Language Resource Center, CALPER has supported language teachers and language education in the United States since 2002.

Are There Any New Resources?

There are quite a number of resources available to teachers of Chinese. Because sometimes it can be difficult to keep up with what is new, we developed a CLTNet Web site in blog format, where we compiled quality resources, so you do not have to do all of the searching.

The site is steadily growing as we research and review materials for teaching, but also information that aids teachers in their professional development. We invite you to browse our CLTNet Resource Hub for Teachers of Chinese.

On the site is a button where you can subscribe to receive a weekly digest of new posts directly to your inbox.

If you would like to suggest materials and information to be included on the site, please write a note to cltnet1@gmail.com.  All suggestions will be reviewed.

What's New on the Bookshelf?

A few months ago, Springer International published a new book " Chinese Language Education in the United States". The volume was edited by Jiening Ruan, Jie Zhang, and Cynthia B. Leung.

It contains 12 chapters on a range of important issues concerning Chinese language education in the U.S. and has great information for both the new teacher in the U.S. as well as the veteran CFL educator. The edited volume includes an overview of the history of CFL, the role of technology in CFL, chapters on teaching at the K-12 level and college levels, on teaching heritage language learners, study abroad and much more.

You can find out more about the articles in the book by going to the Table of Contents.
