Church Staff Focus:

Charged by our Senior Vestry Warden to write something on your Music Director's extra-curricular activities outside music, I thought I might tell you about Saturday mornings, when I am usually to be found volunteering at Capital Adaptive Rowing Club on the Anacostia River. Despite my true sporting loves being Squash and Cricket, I have rowed/sculled since University days at Oxford in England. At Capital on Saturdays, I help haul, set up, rig and row boats for and with people with disabilities. Since 2009, Capital's Adaptive Rowing Program has introduced the sport, along with its rehabilitative benefits, to individuals with disabilities including spinal cord injuries, amputations, visual and cognitive impairments. Capital works with its partners - the Department of Veterans Affairs, the National Rehabilitation Hospital, and the US Olympic Committee Paralympic Sport Program- to build a program that serves the Washington area's population of disabled military veterans and civilians. In recent years I have - bizarrely - won championship medals in Regattas with different partners, but principally with Dammie Onafeko, a remarkable 6' 5" athlete of Nigerian descent who is blind. He and I row double sculls (two blades per rower, as opposed to sweep oar when each individual has one) and have won in his category in Philadelphia at BAYADA Regatta for two years running. It is exciting that the Paralympian Rowing committee is looking at Dammie as a possible US paralympian for 2020 - when he wouldn't, er, be rowing with me! Honorable mention here goes to another Epiphany sculler - our own vestryman Scott Marquardt; he and I have graced the Potomac in a double sculling shell over the summer ... Epiphany Rowing is alive and well! To get a taste of Capital's program, click here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wb6lNeOTGPk
