Woodlawn is bursting with color now that October has arrived. The Black House is open for tours, Tuesday to Sunday, 1 to 4 p.m. through October 31st.

Woodlawn School Programs Attract

Ellsworth 6th graders enjoyed an Object Study program that let them get "hands-on" at Woodlawn!
|
Kids love it, teachers love it, administrators love it. The Woodlawn School Program is a win-win for everyone.
Ellsworth 5th grade teacher Mary Jordan-Carter summed up the program by saying, "Woodlawn makes history come alive for students and connects them to their community in such a unique way. They receive a day of hands-on learning and experience living history, which can't be done by reading a book or using the internet.
"

Blue Hill Consolidated School shared her class visit on the
school's website.
Other schools that visited this fall include Monhegan Island School, Ellsworth Elementary Middle School, Connors Emerson (Bar Harbor), Surry Elementary, Cave Hill School (Eastbrook), and Pemetic (Southwest Harbor).

Woodlawn held
two well-received appraisal events with
Skinner, Inc. Auctioneers & Appraisers
on Friday, Sept. 30 and Saturday, Oct. 1.
The Friday program, What's it Worth? drew
a lively crowd. Guests enjoyed a wine and cheese reception presented by Rooster Brother, followed by an interactive presentation with the appraisers discussing the objects brought by the guests.

Much to the delight of appraiser, Jane Prentiss, the first piece on Saturday was a beautiful example of local folk art.

On Saturday morning the appraisers were greeted by a wa
iting line and a diverse mix of objects. Guests were not only interested in the value of their items, they were eager to learn more about their treasures

Christmas at Woodlawn to welcome A Celebration of Trees
It's the beginning of October and that means its time to start our planning for Christmas at Woodlawn.
Last December, the Black House was filled with 28 trees decorated by area businesses and organizations. It was such a huge hit for decorators and guests, we are inviting the community to help us decorate again this year.

3rd Annual 2-Mile Dead Run and Headless Half Mile at Woodlawn, Saturday, Oct. 22
The 2-Mile Dead Run and Headless Half Mile,

Where is the front door? Why does the brickwork look different? Were the two wings added on? Where did the plans come from? What's a triple sash window? These are a few of the many questions that guests have about the Black House's architecture when they visit.
The house, built between 1824 and 1827 was based on a published design by
American architect, Asher Benjamin (
1773 -
1845)
. Benjamin's work transitioned between Federal architecture and the later Greek Revival architecture. He is perhaps best known as the first American to publish architectural pattern books. His handbooks contained masterful drawings with a great eye to detail along with practical advice.
To view a flip-through copy of Asher Benjamin's American Builder's Companion, click here. Look for Plate LIV on page 103 for the design titled, "a plan for a house intended for a country situation." You will recognize it as Woodlawn, even though there is no front porch and pillars.
