FOOD FOR THOUGHT FROM MESIA PRESIDENT

Hadi Tahboub
President

With Saudi's SEC releasing the list of prequalified bidders on their two 50MW each solar PV projects, Egypt's announcement of the second phase of the FIT program, and, Jordan's Round 3 to be announced any day now, October 2016 seems to be quite a promising launch pad for post-summer 2016 cycle of solar business for the Middle East region.

Furthermore, yet again, in the land of infinite world records broken, the lowest bid anywhere in the world yet, even 16% lower than the already set bi in Chile, the 350 megawatt solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Sweihan, ADWEC (Abu Dhabi Electricity & Water Co.) published the list of prices with the lowest bid at 2.42 US cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh) coming from the Marubeni-Jinko consortium, with the local Masdar-EDF coming in at second-lowest at 2.53 US cents per kWh.

Apart from regional utility scale solar PV and CSP projects, we also expect to see a major increase in distributed solar installations, with more and more roof tops in (primary in 2016-2017) transforming into sun-energy capturing platforms; warehouses and flat roofed industrial facilities in the region had been the lead real estate installing roof top solar, but the trend now has spread like mushrooms let's avoid saying 'like wild fire'!) to schools, hospitals, places of worship, and so on.

On MESIA's upcoming calendar of events, we cordially invite our members community and guests to visit our spacious stand at this week's Dubai Solar Show/WETEX event, to tap into the latest solar energy market developments, and to network with the industry's movers and shakers. I also highly advise local and international companies to join in the upcoming MESIA Trade Mission to Jordan & Palestine, set for mid-November 2016.

Wishing our readers community the sunniest business prospects.

Onwards facing the sun.

Dubai residents not investing in solar power

20 September
Dubai energy chiefs are struggling to convince residents to opt for solar panels to supply power to their homes. That’s despite a huge drop in the price of the renewable energy source in recent years – solar now averages $1 per watt compared with $7 per watt in 2011. “We are pushing residents to take up solar energy,” said Hassan Chymaysse, Dubai Municipality Senior Green Building Engineer, who was speaking to 7DAYS on the sidelines of the Inter Solar Middle East conference at Dubai World Trade Centre.

Is the new record-low price for PV reported this week in Abu Dhabi a killer-watt for solar?

23 September
According to various online sources, the phrase "cheap as chips" comes from a time when wood chips were an inexpensive commodity. The burning of wood chips as a biofuel has long been common practice in heavy industry, but they’ve never been fully embraced as a viable way to heat and power the planet. Not so solar. As PV technology continues its onward march to ubiquity, perhaps one day we’ll have to rethink our idioms to account for just how cheap solar power is becoming.

The GCC’s path to energy diversification

3 September
The Middle East and North Africa accounts for 7 per cent of annual CO2 emissions worldwide, according to the World Bank. But in per capita terms, the Gulf is in a different league entirely. As the organisation notes in a November report, “one Kuwaiti, Emirati or Omani emits as much as 10 Egyptians, Tunisians or Moroccans”. The contrast is particularly stark between the highest per capita consumers, Qataris, and the lowest, Djiboutians and Palestinians. One of the former produces as many emissions as 73 of the latter. And the region will suffer disproportionately should global temperatures increase.
