Oct 4: Panel on the Presidential Election, 7-8:30pm at German Club Mano
The panel, "Anger, Frustration, and the 2016 Presidential Election," The League of Women Voters of Montgomery County and the Lifelong Learning Institute at Virginia Tech have partnered to sponsor this event. There is no charge, and the public is welcome. Karen Hult (Virginia Tech) will be the moderator. Panelists are Caitlin Jewitt (Virginia Tech), Daniel Reed (Radford), and Charles Walcott (Emeritus, Virginia Tech). Professors Hult and Walcott have co-authored two prizewinning books on White House governance, and they have written numerous articles focusing on the US Presidency. Professor Jewitt studies political campaigns and presidential primaries and caucuses. Professor Reed studies voter mobilization and political campaigns.

Come meet the man behind those red TV banners announcing "Severe Weather Alerts"
You know they're coming! Canadian Clippers, Arctic blasts, Nor'easters, snow, freezing rain, super storms, all atop banners that scroll across your TV sets, computers, tablets, and cell phones. 
But who sets all these predictions in motion? Phil Hysell, Warning Coordination Meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Blacksburg. At the October 11  meeting of the Blacksburg Newcomers' Club, Phil will focus on severe weather preparedness and the steps we all can take to be more weather ready! 
When:  Tuesday, October 11, 2016, 9:00-11:30 a.m. 
Where:  Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, 600 Prices Fork Road, Blacksburg, VA. Free babysitting is available for pre-school children ages 6 months and older.
Cost:  No cost for guests attending the meeting. Membership dues are $25.00 a year and include participation in interest groups.

The Montgomery County Educational Foundation (MCEF) is pleased to announce the opportunity for teachers, administrators, and PTAs/PTOs to apply for grants for the fall of 2016. Application deadline is October 10, 2016. The purpose of this grant program is to provide educational opportunities above and beyond what is available through public funding and to benefit the broad spectrum of Montgomery County Public Schools students, at all ages and all levels of ability.
Your business can be part of this movement to provide advanced educational opportunities and learning experiences to Montgomery County Public School students in preschool through 12th grade by sponsoring a grant. Nov 4: 4th Annual Bountiful Baskets Auction, 6pm-9pm at the Blacksburg Library. Please save the date!
Eclectic baskets, each with a unique theme and a centerpiece book, will help build the Endowment for the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Libraries. Come bid and tap your toes to live music while you enjoy wine, beer and light refreshments.  Tickets to the event are $20.00 per person and are available at all MFRL branches (cash/check) and online at mfrl.org

Help make your library better: MFRL has initiated a study of the Blacksburg and Christiansburg libraries. Our patrons' input will play a big part in this study.  Provide input and learn about the previous public forum in August at this second public forum opportunity.
