SW Component Society Honors Outgoing President Beyer
Twenty years. Forty meetings. Kevin Beyer, DO, originally planned on being president of the (MOA) SW Component Society for a 2-3 year term. But with each new year, Dr. Beyer held the helm leaving an indelible legacy on the SW Component Society. His legacy was celebrated at the Kalamazoo Country Club as members, family and friends gathered to honor Dr. Beyer and welcome his successor, Michael Kolinski, DO. The event featured a

display of member meeting notices that stretched from the 1990's to the current era. Beyer acknowledged that things have changed as he gazed over the display. "This was before email. We actually mailed these out," said Beyer as he motioned to a particular favorite, a meeting that featured a museum exhibit from A.T. Still University, "The Healer Within."
Current MOA Board member, and Past President, Dr. Myral Robbins was present to offer her thanks to Dr. Beyer. "Kudos to Dr. Kevin Beyer for his 20 years of dedicated guidance of (MOA) SW Component Society and I look forward to the dynamic leadership of Dr. Michael Kolinski," said Dr. Robbins.
The Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) was represented with Wendy Batchelor, Board Liaison, Todd Ross, Manager of Communications and Marc Staley, Manager of Finance, who each spoke providing updates on MOA activities relating to the component groups.
While Dr. Beyer is stepping aside, his involvement with DO's will continue as he will participate on the MOA Membership Committee, the Council of Government Affairs and the Michigan Osteopathic Political Action Committee (MOPAC).

MOA Hosts Oct. 6th Seminar
In the spring of 2016, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released its proposed rule that links Medicare provider payments to quality patient care. This is the first major step taken by the government to implement the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015, also known as MACRA. The MACRA law replaced the Medicare sustainable growth rate, commonly known as "SGR" or the "doc fix." The law fundamentally changes how Medicare pays physicians and other clinicians who participate in the program.
The CMS announced on Thursday it will allow providers to choose the level and pace at which they comply with the new payment reform model aimed at emphasizing quality patient care over volume. While this step was meant to relieve providers, for some it has added another layer of confusion to the program.
On October 6, 2016, the Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) will host a seminar for physicians and their staff on what they need to know about MACRA. and what they need to know to get ready. MACRA/MIPS implementation begins in 2017, 2017 performance will determine 2019 CMS payment adjustments.
The event will be live at MSUCOM East Lansing Campus, C-102 East Fee HALL Patenge Room and broadcast to the MSUCOM Detroit and Macomb campuses.

Influenza Vaccination Rankings: Michigan Still Lags
The CDC has released national influenza vaccination coverage data for the 2015-16 season that are compiled using National Immunization Survey (NIS) and Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data.
To summarize the 2015-16 findings:
- Nationally, 45.6% of persons aged 6 months and older were vaccinated with 1+ dose of flu vaccine. The national estimate continues to be higher than Michigan's coverage at 42.2%.
- Michigan continues to lag behind the U.S. estimates for all child and adult age groups.
- Michigan's flu coverage among people aged 65 years and older dropped down to 59.5%, a 6.2% decrease from the 2014-15 season.
- Michigan saw the second highest increase in coverage among children aged 5 to 12 years at 59.1% , with a 7.0% increase from the 2014-15 season.
- The national estimates for Michigan also remain higher than flu vaccination coverage data using the Michigan Care Improvement Registry. As a reminder: ALL immunizations administered to children born after December 31, 1993 and less than 20 years of age are required to be entered into MCIR - including flu vaccine!
Despite efforts by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Michigan did not increase in flu coverage across all age groups. Michigan saw a statistically significant decrease in flu coverage among people aged 65 years and older, some of the most susceptible persons for flu-related complications and death. Michigan's %-point difference from the 2014-15 season to the 2015-16 season for adults 65 years and older was -6.2%.

Top Quality Awards for Sparrow from Blue Cross, Blue Care
Three Sparrow medical practices have earned top recognition from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and Blue Care Network, receiving Provider Distinction Awards for quality.
Sparrow Medical Group DeWitt, Sparrow Medical Group St. Johns, and Sparrow Medical Group North (located in East Lansing) were recognized for outstanding contributions to the BCN AdvantageSM and Blue Cross Medicare Plus BlueSM PPO health care plans in 2015.
The practices met measures related to the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Service's Star Quality Program. The St. Johns practice was honored for the third consecutive year.

2016 MDHHS Fall Regional Immunization Conferences
Find out what's new in immunizations!
The MDHHS has sponsored the fall regional immunization conferences annually since 1994. These conferences have consistently received high ratings from attendees. Their primary goal is to update health care providers on immunization issues that affect people of all ages - from the very young to the very old. The one-day conference will provide participants with a variety of practice-management tools, techniques and information that will help assure that all of their patients are fully immunized.

Prescriber Requirement Denials
Effective October 1, 2016, the
Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) will implement enhanced claim processing edits to further deny prescriptions for Fee-For-Service pharmacy program beneficiaries when the prescription is written by a prescriber who is
not enrolled or registered. This is a requirement under section 6401 of the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. To enroll/register with MDHHS or for additional details regarding this policy please refer to policy bulletin MSA 13-17 available at:

Dr. Wartinger's Rollercoaster Study Goes Viral
A Michigan State University professor emeritus has discovered that riding a roller coaster helps patients pass kidney stones with nearly a 70 percent success rate.
David Wartinger, DO, a professor emeritus in the Department of Osteopathic Surgical
Specialties, led both a pilot study and an expanded study to assess whether the stories he was hearing from patients were true. His pilot study is published in the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association.
"Basically, I had patients telling me that after riding a particular roller coaster at Walt Disney World, they were able to pass their kidney stone," Wartinger said. "I even had one patient say he passed three different stones after riding multiple times."
The story has been featured in numerous national news outlets and TV shows. Congratulations to Dr. Wartinger on a unique approach and a memorable study.

MDHHS Annual College Flu Challenge
The MDHHS is teaming up with colleges and universities to challenge students to get vaccinated against the flu. By participating in this challenge, institutions will receive access to educational resources and programs, an award of participation, and a chance to win free registration to state immunization conferences.
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Designates Record Number of Physician Practices as Patient-Centered Medical Homes
Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan and its physician partners are leading the nation in advancing the patient-centered medical home model of care, as 1,638 practices, comprised of 4,534 physicians, have earned designation as patient-centered medical homes.
