Deadline to register to vote is Oct. 11
|
|
 The deadline for registering to vote in Ohio for the Nov. 8 election is Tuesday, Oct. 11. You can register at the Clermont County Board of Elections, 76 S. Riverside Drive, Batavia, or at any public library branch, Bureau of Motor Vehicles location, and
several other locations you will find listed here.
On Election Day, polls will be open from 6:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m.

Recycle old computers Oct. 29
|
|
 A computer recycling day will be held from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at UC Clermont College in the South 1 parking lot.
Items that can be recycled include laptops, desktops, flash drives, network equipment, mice, speakers, scanners, printers, cables, memory towers, servers, monitors, keyboards, UPS or any internal computer components.
Televisions, radios or appliances will not be accepted.

Candlelight Vigil promotes healing
|
|
On Sept. 14 at Veterans Park in Union Township, Clermont County held its 15th annual Candlelight Vigil to remember loved ones whose lives have been lost to suicide. Speakers included Commissioner Ed Humphrey and Karen Scherra, Executive Director of the Clermont County Mental Health and Recovery Board. In 2015, the number of suicide deaths declined in Clermont County. Scherra attributed that to better education, and more awareness of the crisis hotline, 528-SAVE.

Judge Shriver elected chair of Judicial Conf.
|
|
Judge James A. Shriver (front row, center) of Clermont County Common Pleas Probate/Juvenile Division was recently elected Chair of the
Ohio Judicial Conference
. He begins his two-year term on Oct. 1. "I am both humbled and honored that the judges of Ohio have placed their confidence and trust in me to lead the Ohio Judicial Conference in this time of a new beginning," Judge Shriver said. Judge Shriver, known for his many innovative practices both in the Prosecutor's Office and as a longtime judge,
will help lead the work of over 20 committees of judges active in all areas from judicial ethics, public confidence and community outreach.

Sheriff's Office earns certification
|

 Congratulations to the
Clermont County Sheriff's Office
, which recently was certified for meeting the standards in use of force, recruitment and hiring that were established a year ago by the
Ohio Collaborative Community-Police Advisory Board
. This is part of the State of Ohio's efforts to strengthen community and police relations. "The state developed these standards so that all law enforcement agencies are on the same page when it comes to such things as use of force," said Deputy Chief Steve Leahy. Officers complete crisis training

Training helps law enforcement better respond to those with mental illness
 These law enforcement officers were certified Sept. 29 as Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) officers in Clermont County -- the 11th group to have gone through the training. More than 85% of full-time police officers in Clermont County are certified as CIT officers. CIT training promotes a partnership between mental health professionals and first responders. Since law enforcement is often the first to arrive to a call for help, they are often the first to have the opportunity

to identify a mental health concern. During training, the officers go through role-playing exercises to help them learn how to respond to those with mental illnesses.
Participating agencies included Clermont County Sheriff's Office (deputies and corrections officers); Felicity Police; Goshen Township Police; Miami Township Police, and Union Township Police.

CASA NEWS: On Sept. 14 more than 20 local leaders brainstormed ideas to help grow the
CASA for Clermont Kids Board of Directors membership and programs.
CASA advocates for the best interests of abused, neglected and dependent children who have been introduced into Clermont County Juvenile Court. CASA recruits and trains citizens as Guardians ad Litem who work within the court system to serve as the child's advocate and court representative.

 FUNDRAISER FOR CASA: Clermont County Farm Bureau and Baxla Tractor Sales are holding a "Girls Night Out" from 6-9 p.m. Oct 13 at Baxla Tractor, 610 W. Main St., Batavia, to raise money for CASA for Clermont Kids. This event will feature locally sourced farm-to-table food, speakers, equipment demonstrations, and various items from women-owned businesses.

ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP: Registration is now open for the Clermont County Organizational Leadership Academy by
OSU Extension Clermont County. The Academy is designed for elected officials from county, municipal, and township governments, and appointed individuals serving on local government committees, zoning and planning commissions, school boards or task forces.
