Makeovers

Robbye P. Floyd, Interim Executive Director
As I write this, we in San Antonio have made it through another long, hot summer, enjoyed our Labor Day weekend and the Autumnal Equinox, and are delighting in the lower temperatures of our first seasonal cold front.  Fall is a busy time of year for Dress for Success® San Antonio, with our yearly Spooktacular Fall Sale coming up October 13-15 at our offices and our annual gala fundraising event-A Taste of Success Casino Night-to take place on October 28 at the Sheraton Gunter.  Then, of course, Halloween, a November thank-you to our local Veterans, Thanksgiving, and the Holiday Season are upon us!  And, all the while, we will be providing comprehensive job readiness training and mentoring, along with interview and new employment clothing and accessories, for an average of 133 clients per month.

Demographics for our clients include racial diversity that essentially mirrors the population of San Antonio.  In the last fiscal year, clients self-described as 45.5% Hispanic, 17.5% African American, and 27% Caucasian, with the remainder distributed among other categories.  67% are definably homeless, living in shelters, residential centers, or transiently with relatives or friends; 45% are single mothers, and 31% acknowledge experiencing domestic violence; 35% are in recovery from substance abuse; 19% are ex-offenders; and 11% are veterans.  When they come to us, few clients have attained educational status beyond a high school diploma or GED and many have not graduated.  However, those who do have college backgrounds range up to the PhD level.

If you don't fit into any of the above categories, don't breathe too big a sigh of relief.  By all accounts, the average American is one paycheck away from the streets.  One catastrophic illness, job layoff, or other unexpected income-disruptive circumstance can very quickly turn any of us into someone in need of services like those we provide.  If that stunning revelation doesn't shake us out of our complacency and into awareness and appreciation, then we are simply choosing to ignore reality.

So, while you revel in the refreshing changes that come with Fall, the unbeatable bargains you'll find on clothing and accessories at the Spooktacular Fall Sale, and the mouth-watering cuisine and games of chance at the Taste of Success Casino Night, keep in mind that you are supporting our ability to provide services that empower the transformation of individual lives, of family dynamics, and even of our local economy.  And, for that, all of San Antonio thanks you.

Jessica Urias
I am Jessica Urias. I was in foster care for eight years. I was unemployed and was excited to be given an opportunity to be interviewed for a job, but I was three months pregnant and had only $15 in my account. I couldn't fit into any of the professional clothes I had in my closet.

My caseworker at the BCFS Health and Human Services, a transitional center for former foster youth, suggested I go to Dress for Success San Antonio. The staff were so sweet and helpful; they helped me find a suit and told me that if I ever needed anything they would always extend a helping hand.

Meeting them motivated me because they were so compassionate and because they wanted me to succeed. Without their help I probably would not have been accepted for the job at the San Antonio Area Foundation.

I have been with the Area foundation for a year and a half. I chair a youth council for the THRU Project, and I speak on behalf of the Open Table Program. Both of these programs help the former foster youth community. I am passionate about giving back to people who are going through struggles I once faced.

Linda Lobeck
October 1st marked the official one-year anniversary of my joining the Dress for Success San Antonio family. And it is a family--only we don't argue! The respect, cooperation and camaraderie inspires me every day.

I work in the executive office, in the back, with no windows. I affectionately call my office 'the cave' and occasionally have to take a walk-about to see the sun or seek out human contact (not to say that my office mate is not human). Although I don't usually interact with clients except for a 'hello' now and again, I can hear most of what happens out where the action is. I hear the celebrations and the laughter as clients discover their true selves. I hear their stories of recovery, discovery, and accomplishment.

I hear our staff interacting with each other, celebrating and 'high-fiving' with our clients. It makes me smile very time I hear a particular giggle from one of our staff. What we do here at Dress for Success San Antonio is important - important to our clients, the community and to the staff. Thanks everyone, for allowing me to be a part of it.
