AgriSafe in Action- October 2016

October is Healthy Lung Month
Autumn is the season of the harvest, when farmers  reap what they planted in the spring. This harvest season will present challenges for many of our farmers and we ask that you remind farmers that the time to take shortcuts could come with a high cost. Crops are damp due to excessive rain and flooding, and many farmers are racing against the clock to get all their crops harvested.

With this in mind, AgriSafe would like to remind you of our newly revised  Agricultural Respirator Selection Guide  to assist  in helping farmers and farm workers identify the proper respirator for their various jobs.

In addition to harvest season, October is National Healthy Lung Month, a month that for many people causes multiple problems pertaining to their lungs. Problems that stem from the pollens and mold that are so prevalent this time of the year. There are several fall pollens such as ragweed, nettle,  and others, which many people are allergic to.

Youth Volunteers Needed

The  AgriSafe  Network is seeking young volunteers from across the nation to join our Young Advisors Council. Rural leaders ages 16-23 who are interested in representing perspectives of youth in agriculture are welcome to volunteer as a member of the AgriSafe Young Advisors Council (AYAC). The AYAC is a unique opportunity for youth in agriculture to impact the health and safety of their peers.
AYAC is charged with assisting  AgriSafe  to design and launch educational initiatives that can reduce farm related illness, injury and fatalities. AYAC members have the opportunity to develop leadership skills, public health experience and may even represent  AgriSafe  at meetings or forums.

Invest in Your Health

Fall training's are off to a great start at three colleges (South Central College, Kirkwood Community College,  and Iowa State AGEd 450 Farm). Students participate in interactive lectures with PPE demonstrations and important health and safety messages. This year students are encouraged to increase health and safety awareness beyond the classroom with social media posts to Facebook and Snap Chat. Safety messages are also video recorded as another way to increase awareness. Student nurses are participating in this program by assisting with important health screenings.

Contact Carolyn Sheridan at [email protected] if you are interested in learning more about how to bring this program to your college.  Special thanks to our program sponsors, 3M and CHS for their support of this program.

Harvest Health and Safety

Harvest is not only a busy time but it can also be a dangerous time for farm operators, workers and family members.

There are many contributing factors to the increased risk ranging from taking short cuts, not getting enough sleep or taking regular breaks, working with inexperienced or "once a year" workforce and the pressure of having enough time to get the work done.

AgriSafe Network  Members have access to our Resource Library which provides a number of Webinars with valuable information related to harvest safety.  Discussing Harvest Safety Tips with family members and workers can also help reduce the likelihood of serious injuries.
Tractor Training Just for Women

Focused on the needs of women for learning tractor skills, these one day hands-on workshops are offered on Sunday October 16 and Sunday October 23, 2016 at Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vermont.

While these workshops are designed to meet the learning needs and preferences of women farmers, they are open to everyone.   To learn more and  to register for one or both workshops, click here
