A Message from the
Deputy Superintendent

Dear Lovejoy Community:

It is hard to believe it is October.  I hope the first six weeks of school have been tremendously positive for the children in your home.  I wanted to share information about an academic competition available at the high school, the Academic Decathlon.  The Academic Decathlon provides students with an opportunity for rigorous academic competition through participation in team activities.

The Academic Decathlon teams at Lovejoy High School have experienced limited success because our excellent students have been competing as a partial team against the complete high school teams in our district and region.  The Academic Decathlon is designed to include nine students.  Three of the students have a GPA which falls in the "A" range, three have a GPA in the "B" range, and three have a GPA in the "C" range.  Texas provides $150,000 in scholarship money each year to individuals on the teams advancing to the state level.

In addition to a seven-minute interview, a one-hour essay and two speeches (four minutes prepared and two minutes impromptu), written comprehensive exams are given in music, art, literature, mathematics, economics, social science, and the Super Quiz.  Each year there is a major topic assigned to the teams which is the focus of several subjects and of  the Super Quiz.  This year the focused topic is World War II.

The final event is the Super Quiz relay.  In this event all students assemble to answer twelve multiple-choice questions.

The Lovejoy Academic Decathlon competition will be held on Friday, January 20th.  To learn more about Academic Decathlon or to join the LHS team, please contact Jason Taylor at [email protected].

We hope you love where you have chosen for your child to learn.  If you have feedback to help us improve, please do not hesitate to contact me on my cell at 214.385.1967.

Respectfully,
Dennis Muizers

Revisiting Diversity:  More than a Buzzword:  November 17
You see it sprinkled in college catalogs, corporate mission statements, and in employee training seminars:  Diversity.  A New York Times piece recently made the claim that the ubiquitous word has all but lost its meaning.  This lecture, presented by Dr. Salena Brody, will revisit what diversity really means for our schools, workplaces, and communities, focusing on social science research from the past half century.

Thursday, November 17, 2016
6:00 - 7:30 PM
Lovejoy ISD Administration Building/Training Room

Dr. Salena Brody is a professor of Psychology at Collin College.  She earned her doctorate in Social Psychology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, studying intergroup contact and attitude change.  Her research focuses on identifying the conditions under which contact between groups leads to prejudice reduction and other positive outcomes.  She is a Phi Beta Kappa member and has received numerous teaching awards including being named the 2016-2017 Outstanding Professor of the Year at Collin College.  She is a proud Lovejoy parent and active member of the community, serving on the Friends of Fairview Fire Board of Directors.
