ScienceDebate.org is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization, backed by a long list of science organizations, business representatives, and Nobel Laureates, that has been advocating since the 2008 election for a presidential debate devoted entirely to science topics.

What It Will Take to Keep Women from Leaving STEM

A recent survey showed that STEM degrees are among the most lucrative for graduates. When you look at the gender breakdown of students entering these fields, it's about 60% male and 40% female, and at the PhD level the numbers are closer. But what happens as people's career trajectories progress? Over time, those talented women with their PhD in STEM start to drop out of technical and industrial careers. By the time careers reach leadership levels, as few as 15% of those talented women remain, according to some estimates.

Does the Every Student Succeeds Act Actually Require 95% Participation on State Assessments?

President Obama signed the Every Student Succeeds Act, Pub.L. 114-95, 129 Stat. 1802, into law on December 10, 2015, replacing the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001.
Under the Every Student Succeeds Act, states must test public school students in mathematics and reading every year in grades 3 through 8, and at least once during high school. It has been widely reported that the Every Student Succeeds Act mandates 95% participation by pupils on these required state tests. But does it really?

Washington STEM Launches STEM Photography Competition
Washington STEM, a non-profit in Washington State that promotes equity, excellence, and innovation in science, technology, engineering, and math for all students in Washington state, is launching a STEM photography competition in partnership with Getty Images and the UK campaign Your Life to repicture STEM. They want to see contemporary images of these topics which celebrate people of all ages and backgrounds engaging in them. The competition is open for all to enter.
Breakthrough Junior Challenge Deadline is October 10, 2016
In partnership with the Khan Academy, the Challenge invites students ages 13 to 18 to create original videos that bring to life a concept or theory in the life sciences, physics or mathematics. Each submission will be judged on the student's ability to communicate complex scientific ideas in the most engaging, illuminating and imaginative ways. One winner will be recognized and will be awarded a $250,000 educational prize. The science teacher who inspired the winning student will win $50,000, and the winner's school will receive a state-of-the art science lab valued at $100,000, designed in partnership with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory
. The Breakthrough Junior Challenge winner will also be invited to the Breakthrough Prize ceremony on December 4, where she or he will be receiving the award during the televised show.
