Hot off the Press: Member Personal Record Books!
For the past year, a small group of Michigan State University Extension staff, members of the life skills team have been working on updating the personal record book. The book is now more modern and user friendly for youth, volunteers, and event coordinators.  New to the record book:

-Fillable PDF
-Lots of different parts so youth can pick pages that relate to them
-Instruction that can be use by leaders/parents on filling out the portfolio
-Color instead of Black and White

This resource will  be available through the MSU Extension Bookstore
.

2016-17 Macomb County 4-H Newsletter
The Macomb County 4-H Family Newsletter is now scheduled to be emailed on the first of every month. Sign up to receive this FREE monthly newsletter at http://bit.ly/2bWXaKW .
Let us know what you and your 4-H club or committee are up to! 4-H members, volunteers and their families are encouraged to submit articles, photos and announcements for publication by the 25th of the month to [email protected] . Identification should accompany each photo submitted, and always be sure to include your contact information!

Mark your Calendars for 4-H Horse Winter Projects at Goodells County Park!
The days are getting shorter, and the weather is turning cooler, but that doesn't mean the horse project has to end. 4-H members in Macomb and St. Clair counties, please join us to learn about your favorite things in the world (horses of course) and make some new friends. "Winter Projects" encompasses several horse-related experiences, described below, and will meet the first Monday of every month, October through April, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Community Building at the Goodells County Park (horse judging may run until 8:30). Regardless of your background or experience, if you want to learn, we want you to join us! Come check out our first meeting on October.

Intro group (non-competition)
This group meets to learn the basics, and has an absolutely fantastic time doing so. Some of last year's topics included a blacksmith demonstration, equine first aid, making horse treats, the history of show clothes, nutrition/poisonous plants, tack, and grooming. Please contact Marianne Moskal at (810) 305-9834 with any questions. She will be planning lots of great sessions for the upcoming year!

Hippology and Horse Bowl:  These competitive groups will be coached by Heather Mudge and will meet on the Mondays above. Details and expectations will be discussed at the October meeting. Contact Heather at (810) 434-4359 or [email protected] with "horses" in the subject line with any questions.

Hippology is literally the study of all things horse. Contestants will judge halter classes, take a written exam, evaluate horse related slides and stations, and participate in solving a team problem at MSU in April.

Horse Bowl is exactly what it sounds like--quiz bowl with horse questions. Check out what it's like to test your knowledge and reflexes at the same time! Contest to take place at MSU in April.

Horse Judging:  This group is open to both those wanting to compete and those who just want to learn what the judge is looking for, and will be coached by Lucy Brown. Contact Lucy at (586) 855-3215 or [email protected] with any questions, or to be placed on the contact list if you can't make the October meeting. Additional "classroom style" meetings and live judging clinics will be scheduled throughout the winter, with a contest at MSU in April. The focus will be 50% conformation (halter) and 50% performance classes for various breeds. Contestants will judge eight classes at the April contest, answer questions on some classes (in writing), and verbally explain their placings for some classes to a judge, one on one.

This past spring, the St. Clair County Senior Regular Team of Felishia Block, Carrie Brown, Samanthia Enright, and Hailey Moses placed second in the state and will be going on to compete at the Eastern National 4-H Roundup in Louisville, KY in November. Great job girls and best of luck at Nationals!!

Communications:  Give an individual speech or demonstration on a horse topic, or partner up with some friends to do so, at MSU in April. Talk to Lucy or Heather for additional details. This is a fairly new contest area, and we'd love to send some participants from Macomb and St. Clair counties!

Important things to know:
  • The Hippology, Horse Bowl, and Horse Judging contests take place at the same time, so you can only compete in one area.
  • Communications is the night before the other contests, so everyone can participate in communications.
  • Everyone is welcome at the additional horse judging meetings and clinics, but sometimes they are scheduled last minute, so let Lucy know if you want to be on the contact list.
  • Homeschoolers can receive credit for winter projects as a course, if they compete. Competition is considered the final exam.
  • Most importantly, we hope you can join us for a fun and exciting season!

They were delighted to receive one steer, four hogs, and two lambs. One additional hog was donated by C-Roy and Son Processing, making for a total of five hogs. Statewide 4-H News & Events
4-H: Today's Big Picture and Our Proud Heritage!

What is 4-H?
4-H, the largest youth-development organization in both Michigan and the U.S., was thought up in the late 1880s. At the time, university, agricultural researchers realized farmers were often not willing to try new methods being developed on campus. However, noting that (as today) young people:
(1) were open to new thinking, (2) would experiment with new ideas and (3) would then share their experiences with adults, the researchers introduced their new ideas to rural youth. Thus began 4-H!

Where can 4-H programs be found?
While 4-H continues to use the hands-on, learning-by-doing, experiential learning approach, its scope has expanded. Today, our 200,000-plus Michigan 4-H members are part of a program that reaches 7 million young people in more than 50 countries. 4-H Youth Development exists in all but one of the seven continents. As can be seen on this map, there are 4-H programs in North America, Mexico, much of Central America, Bolivia, many northern European and Scandinavian countries, much of the southern third of Africa, nearly all of eastern and Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Michigan 4-H welcomes youth from all parts of the state (from the Upper Peninsula to our border with Indiana, from Lake Michigan's shores to those of Lake Huron, and everywhere in between). Although Michigan 4-H still has rural programs, it now also includes youth from urban areas and the suburbs, as well. Quite a difference from just 25 years ago!

What is 4-H's focus?
Embracing our 90-year-old motto, "To make the best better," today's 4-H continues its intentional focus on making its members leaders of change. Though different times dictate changing interests and focuses, Michigan 4-H holds fast to its heritage of concentrating its educational efforts on science (animal, engineering and technology and environmental and outdoor education), healthy living and empowering young people to be good citizens locally and globally. Michigan 4-H has also established a strong, intentional mentoring program, including 4-H Tech Wizards, as a way of allowing more young people to participate.

How is 4-H doing?
In 2013, Tufts University scholars, Drs. Richard and Jacqueline Lerner, published a first-of-its-kind research report that defines and measures 4-H's positive, youth development. It demonstrates that 4-H members excel in academic achievement, civic engagement and healthy living. Each year, MSU Extension compiles and publishes data about the impact its children and youth programs have. 2015 data can be found here.

As you celebrate National 4-H Week (October 2 to 8), take pride in being part of not only the
largest youth-development organization in the country, but also being a member of a program that has remained true to its founders, while quickly responding to today's challenges!
