Proposed Legislation on Homeless Encampment Sweeps

Last month, the City Council introduced legislation that would dramatically change how the City manages encampments on public property. The Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce joined with community and neighborhood organizations to advocate for changes to the legislation to ensure people were treated with dignity and respect while balancing the needs of our local businesses, schools, visitors and community members.

More than a thousand people have shared their concerns with the City Councilbut the current legislation that was introduced at Council last week leaves large portions of the City that would effectively be open for camping, including parkland and city sidewalks. This is not the vision we should have for our community while not investing in people-focused solutions to end homelessness. We need to encourage our leaders to focus on the big picture of solving our homeless crisis. Please take a few moments to review the legislation and voice your concerns by phone or email to  City Councilmembers.

In the meantime, the Chamber works closely with outreach workers from the Downtown Seattle Association to help people experiencing homelessness. As of Oct 1st, trained specialists have contacted 460 individuals in Capitol Hill and connected more than a dozen people with a range of services such as medical care, employment, substance treatment, employment and food. If you see someone who you think needs services or support, please call them at
206-973-1835 Mon - Fri between 7 am - 6 pm.

Have a Say! KC Metro Night Owl Service Changes

As our metropolitan region continues to grow, our need to travel 24/7 is also growing.

Today, Metro has about 40 bus routes with some level of late-night service (between midnight and 5 a.m.) throughout King County. Of these, 20 provide trips after 2 a.m.

It's been many years since we looked at how well this service is working, so we reached out to riders last spring to learn more about their transit experiences between midnight and 5 a.m.

We used that feedback to create a proposal that features service on more routes, improved connections to destinations such as the airport, and added trips that would provide all-night service on many Metro routes.

Now we're asking for feedback on this proposal. Your input will help shape a final recommendation for review by the King County Council in 2017.
