Letter from the President
HBAM President Greg Smith
We are almost half way through our Fall membership drive and it looks like we are off to a great start.

We had a spike in membership for August, and it is all because of teamwork. Our local associations gained over 74 new members this past month.

Special thanks to our Jackson HBA for recruiting over 59 new members in one month!

Our goal for the Fall membership drive is to get a 10% increase for each local association. As you work to recruit members, remember to reiterate the many benefits that the members earn with their 3-in-1 membership. You can always contact HBAM staff if you need help in recruiting.

Also, I want to thank everyone who attended the PAC Builders and Brews event this past week. This was our first event of this kind, and all proceeds will benefit Build PAC. We raised several thousand dollars at the event. Billy Ray, HBAM executive board member and HBAJ member/board member,  is our alternate national Build PAC representative. He spear-headed this event and worked hard to make it a success. Thanks also to all of the members who provided food, officials who judged the event and HBA of Jackson for hosting.

Finally, I want to make sure you all have the 2016 Annual Fall Conference and Education Forum on your calendars. The meeting will be November 8-10 at the Embassy Suites in Ridgeland. This will be your opportunity to learn about the new partnership with Amfed Workers Compensation on the Safe Builder Certification Program to see a potential 10 percent savings. All of the planned education seminars are free to members. Make plans now to attend!

Sincerely,

Greg Smith

2016 Builders & Brews: THANK YOU!

We wanted to take the opportunity to thank everyone who made the 2016 Builders & Brews such a success! It was an awesome opportunity to eat great food, try new local craft beer and raise money for our Build PAC advocacy efforts.

We especially appreciate the members who provided the food as well as the Home Builders Association of Jackson for hosting the event and lending their staff to assist.

Thanks again to all those who cooked, attended and donated to our efforts! Feel free to check out our Facebook page for pictures from the event.

NAHB Joins Lawsuit to Block Overtime Rule
On September 20th, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) joined a coalition of more than 55 businesses who have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Labor regarding an upcoming federal overtime rule.

The rule was issued earlier this year, which will double the current overtime salary limit and also allows the minimum salary requirements to be raised every three years.

The coalition of opposition calculates that the short period of implementation could actually hurt a significant number of the workers the rule was intended to help. The rule could force small business owners to scale back on pay and benefits, in addition to cutting employee hours.

NAHB and state associations serve as advocates for small business like our members and are currently working with in a bipartisan legislative initiative to mitigate the effects of the overtime rule.

Current efforts support The Overtime Reform and Enhancement Act (H.R. 5813), which would allow gradually raise the threshold over a timeline of 2016 to 2019. The legislation passed the House on September 29th.

NAHB is encouraging the swift implementation of this legislation. HBAM will continue to provide information regarding the lawsuit and legislation as it develops.
