Today, Monday October 3, 2016, Governor Gina Raimondo and the Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources (OER) kicked off a month-long celebration of National Energy Awareness Month - a nationwide effort to underscore how essential energy is to enhancing our environment and economy.

The event at Newport Solar marked the beginning of OER's month-long campaign to raise awareness about Rhode Island's clean energy achievements and the many ways Rhode Islanders can benefit from energy efficiency measures and other "green" initiatives. The event also celebrated the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy's (ACEEE) recent ranking of Rhode Island as fourth in the country for best energy efficiency programs and policies.

For more announcements and fun ways to participate in National Energy Awareness Month, follow us on Twitter (@EnergyRI). To view the ACEEE State Energy Efficiency Scorecards visit aceee.org/state-policy/scorecard.

Solarize is a program created in partnership by the Office of Energy Resources, Commerce RI and the non-profit organization SmartPower to encourage the adoption of solar using the power of group purchasing and a grass-roots community outreach plan.  At the request of Warwick residents and City administrators, the Solarize Warwick program will be extended until November 30th, giving residents an additional 8 weeks to sign up and sign a contract to go solar.

Interest in the program has steadily increased since its launch on July 25th. To date, more than 100 residents have signed up with interest in the program, more than 40 have received home solar assessments and a total of 14 kW's have been contracted. For more information please visit the Solarize website.

On September 11-14, the National Association of State Energy Officials (NASEO) held their Annual Meeting at the Biltmore in Providence, Rhode Island. The event, which attracted hundreds of attendees including State energy officials, private companies, federal agencies, and NGO's from all over the country, also celebrated the 30th Anniversary of NASEO.

Attendees gathered to discuss innovative state energy topics, policies, and programs including building energy consumption, efficiency, and financing, grid modernization and security, distributed energy resources, and alternative fuel vehicles. The Office of Energy Resources (OER) would like to thank all those who attended. The meeting ended with a ferry ride and tour of the nation's first off-shore wind project at Block Island. The R.I. Infrastructure Bank recently announced $17.2 million in financing for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects in six Rhode Island communities:  Pawtucket, Providence, Cranston, West Warwick, Westerly and Newport.

These projects represent the first round of funding through the Infrastructure Bank's Efficient Buildings Fund (EBF), a revolving loan fund created to finance energy projects for municipally owned buildings, school facilities, and quasi-governmental agency buildings. The initial round of funding is expected to create or support 263 jobs, according to state officials.

OER, along with the RI Department of Environmental Management and Ocean State Clean Cities, held the 3rd annual National Drive Electric Week event at Garden City Center in Cranston on Saturday, September 10th. Over 150 people attended and many shared their experiences of driving electric vehicles. Over 35 electric vehicles were available for attendees to explore. In addition, attendees were able to participate in learning sessions where guest speakers discussed new vehicle options and the charging infrastructure available to support them. Guests also participated in "ride and drives" using some of the latest vehicles from Chevrolet, Volkswagen, Ford, and BMW. The program was a success and we are looking forward to hosting our 4th event next year!"

For more information about OER's electric vehicle programs please visit the OER website.

Conversion to more energy efficient LED fixtures throughout our public roadways is one method for state agencies and municipalities to capture substantial long-term energy consumption and cost savings.

Through the Municipal LED Streetlight Energy Efficiency Incentives Program,  OER provides $1,525,000.00 in financial incentives for qualified municipalities seeking to install light-emitting diode (LED) streetlights and control technologies. Already, four municipalities - Providence, Bristol, Barrington and West Warwick - have applied and are moving forward with the program. Together, these four municipalities will convert 23,862 fixtures (25% of the total streetlights in RI) and save 14,699,960 kWh annually.
