Are there any types of events that you'd like to see from the LGBT Resource Center?
Lauren: I don't know if it's already something that's planned, but I would love to have a fun movie night! I think But I'm a Cheerleader is still on Netflix :)
Kayla: I don't know specifically but I would love events that are very interactive. I think it would be great to meet more people in the community.
What are you most excited for about college?
Lauren: I'm looking forward to becoming more independent and forming lasting friendships, as well as pursuing my education and future career path. I guess that's not really one main thing, but I'm excited for everything!
Kayla: There's just so much but I really am excited about new people. I'm also excited to learn and get started on my future and education.

Meet our $500 Welcome Scholarship winners from Q Camp!
How was your Q Camp experience and what does it mean for you as one of your first experiences here at UCSD?
Lauren: It was amazing! I'd never seen that many LGBT+ classmates in one place before. Back in high school, the GSA I started was shut down because we didn't have enough members, so it was incredibly comforting and reassuring to see so many members of the community come to a school event (and those were just the new students!)
Kayla: It was a really good experience where I was able to meet like minded people. I'm very glad it was one of my first UCSD experiences because it showed me a very safe accepting campus.
How do you feel you will get involved with the LGBT community on this campus?
Lauren: I'm very busy this quarter, but I hope to volunteer with LGBT+ housing events or the resource center as soon as I can. Right now, I'm attending as many events as possible and making a lot of new friends.
Kayla: I am hoping to volunteer and intern at the center! I was the Youth president of PFLAG in my community, a support group for LGBT adults and families, so I'm hoping to get involved here too.
What do you look forward to seeing in our community?
Lauren: I look forward to an accepting environment and many more educational and fun events. Everyone and everything have been amazing so far.
Kayla: I am hoping to see more allies and acceptance from the general UCSD community. We also have a long way to go, especially with transgender issues, but we are getting places.

CELEBRATE LGBTQ HISTORY MONTH WITH
Kim Katrin Milan, award-winning educator, activist, writer and artist.

This presentation explores multiple intersections of identity within the LGBTQ community-including race, gender and ability-as powerful sites of community organizing. Milan approaches activism as an important agent for changing systems and examines how diverse groups have different bases of accountability and issues they mobilize around. By establishing a shared language and deconstructing systems of oppression, Milan emphasizes the importance of sustainability and self-care. Drawing on her background as the daughter of a librarian and one of the owners of the oldest LGBT bookstore in the world, Milan addresses the cultural shifts made by Queer and Trans folks, using current social media-based examples. Attendees will gain a solid foundation for understanding the experiences of others, and tangible strategies for solidarity and how to act in allyship.
Kim Katrin Milan is a queer, multi-racial womyn of color, and the co-founder and Executive Director of The People Project, a movement of queer and trans folks of color and allies, committed to individual and community empowerment through alternative education, art activism and collaboration. She has ten years of local and international community development experience, and recently hosted Laverne Cox at "Supporting Our Youth," a dialogue for LGBTQ youth. Kim also engages in community-based healing initiatives including teaching Queer and Brown Girls Yoga, and retreats for femme-identified Folks of Colour and Indigenous Folks. She is also one of the owners of the Glad Day Book Shop, the oldest LGBT bookstore in the world.
LGBTQ History Month is an annual observance of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender history, as well as the history of the gay rights movement. Alongside Milan's lecture, the Library will feature an art wall with posters of queer activists of color, works by LGBTQ poets of color from the Archive for New Poetry will be on display, and recent books on the diverse intersections of identity within the LGBTQ community will be available for check out. The exhibit runs from October 1 -November 3, 2016 on the second (main) floor of the Geisel Library building in the East Wing.

The Healing Journey for Trans Folks

Calling for all folks (Undergraduates , Graduates, Staff and Faculty) who identify along the Trans spectrum, to come connect in a three part series program space that is validating, intentionally building community, while also holding space to explore and share what each individual healing journey looks likes navigating a cis-normative world.
The first program of the series is intended to create an uplifting, light, and validating space for folks to come and share space with other Trans identifying folks, and just get to know one another, while beginning discussion on what does healing looking like for each individual and as a community?
This is a closed space for folks who identify along the trans spectrum.

T*Camp SoCal 2017
SoCal T*Camp brings together transgender, genderqueer and gender-questioning college students for an intercampus retreat January 6-8, 2017. Both undergraduates and graduates who are currently enrolled are welcome to apply.
The deadline to apply is October 30. You will be notified in November about your application status.

Coming Out Group Tuesdays, 4:00-5:30pm Small Meeting Room | Women's Center The Coming Out group is a place to meet and gain support while discussing your sexual and/or gender Identities in a confidential setting. This group is for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, straight, or questioning folks who are coming out, considering coming out or may already be out. Topics are determined by group participants and can include stress, fear, anxiety, loneliness, family/cultural issues, excitement and celebration with regard to coming out. The group is open to new members the first 3 meetings of each quarter and then closes to maintain safe space. Frat parties mocking Black History Month, homophobic slurs, anti-Mexican graffiti on campus, and sexual harassment...these reoccurring events affect ALL students, underrepresented or not, and demonstrate the need for a conversation about student experiences related to the campus climate at UC San Diego. Join the conversation and submit your creative work!
The UC San Diego Library is creating a "living archive" as an alternative way to highlight awareness, provide a space for dialogue, and preserve and document events related to UC San Diego history. A living archive is a collection of materials presented in a way that allows for the expression, exhibition, documentation, and preservation of a sentiment or movement in a particular community. This type of "archiving" is "living" because it is constantly updated with the current climate and consists of all manner of expression from documents of the past, to creative expression through art, to real-time feedback of the current period.
We want YOU to be a part of the Living Archive. What do you have to say or express about the current climate at UCSD?
The physical exhibit will run from February 1 - March 31, 2016 in Geisel Library, with a permanent online collection of submissions. Deadline for submissions is November 30th and you must be enrolled as a current UCSD student. Paintings, drawings, collages, prints, sculptures, photographs, performance art, written work, video or film are welcome!
