I hope you had a wonderful Summer!  As we gear up for Fall here in the U.S., in India, Akanksha's students and schools are in full swing.  Below is our latest newsletter, which includes glimpses into how Akanksha's approach to education goes far beyond its rigorous classroom curriculum.

Puja Wagh and Gouri Sadhwani
After visiting our schools this summer, I was reminded of how each one of our program's statistics-21 schools, 6800 students, 3 centers-represents a collection of powerful stories.  I was humbled to hear many of these stories during my visit a nd was particularly taken by the passion and optimism of 23 year old Puja Wagh, one of our alumni.  Puja attended an Akanksha center from 2002 to 2012.  She described to me how she learned abo ut Akanksha when Anu Aga, one of Akanksha's board members in India, came to speak to her community af ter the government had torn down residents' homes.  Puja, one of seven children, is the only one in her family to pass the 10th grade.  She has just succeeded in passing the notoriously difficult CA (Certified Accountant) exam, preparing her for a career as a tax accountant.  Puja represents what is possible with all our students if they are provided the skills, opportunities, and support needed to thrive.  Like you, I feel privileged to be able to support the making of future Pujas.

Here in the U.S., the Akanksha Fund is pleased to welcome Tori Morris and
Liz Seth to the Akanksha team.  Both will be working with us part-time to help us with outreach and communications.  We are also pleased to welcome new U.S. board members Punya Shah and Shankar Iyer to the Akanksha family.

Thank you for your ongoing support of Akanksha!

My best,
Gouri Sadhwani

Akanksha Job Switch

This year Akanksha initiated a program called "Job Switch."  Professionals from various fields were asked to spend an hour in a classroom while one of our students took their place at work.  Professionals included CEOs, a head chef, a cop, the national editor of a business news channel, a national radio host and a fitness trainer from a famous wellness center in Mumbai.

The goal was to provide our visiting professionals with an immersive experience of our programs, while our children learned what it takes to become a leader in the professional world.

Student Blog

Sitaram Mill Compound Mumbai Public School has started a blog showcasing student writing and school culture.  Through the blog, students have a wonderful opportunity to create an online community and expand their horizons beyond the classroom.

Here is one post from a 5th grader, Riya Bodke, writing on the topic of
"
Bias in Society":

"A few years ago, girls were regarded as goddess Laxmi in their houses, but now female infanticide has started taking place.  Also, it is being said that girls should not go to school but should only do household chores.

My brother is being sent to private school and I as a girl to a government school.  Also boys are getting more quantity of food but girls are getting less quantity of food.  I think this is wrong.  Why are they discriminating against girls?  Even girls are human beings.

In some countries, government has said that people can have only one child.  If you will have a son, you will get land free.  But, if you have a daughter, you will get nothing.  So some people started becoming greedy and also started killing their girls.

Also, when Gandhiji was traveling by train in South Africa, he was pushed out of the train by South African people because of his complexion.  They pushed him out of the train even though he had the ticket.

In my opinion, girls should also study rather than doing home chores.  I also think girls, too, have the right to education.  For me, boys are the stars and girls are the moon because they make the whole world bright.  We all as adults should live equally and happily.  We should change our mindset and curb bias in our society."
