Rancho Cordova City Council moves Rio Del Oro project forward

The Rancho Cordova City Council in a Special Meeting on August 29, 2016, approved amendments to the Rio Del Oro Specific Plan, the largest land development project in the City. These approvals move the project forward to the design and permitting phase, allowing for a ground breaking as early as 2018.

"This is a historic day for Rancho Cordova," said Mayor David Sander. "We are charting a path forward with one of the largest developments in the Sacramento region. Rio Del Oro sets a regional mark for how modern, suburban, upscale development can be done. This project places a variety of exciting new housing opportunities next to Rancho Cordova's existing region-leading job center, while adding more mixed use opportunities, the area's largest public park, and what will be the most bicycle trail miles in the region."

Rio Del Oro covers 3,828 acres on a site bordered by White Rock Road to the north, Sunrise Blvd. to the west, and Douglas Blvd. to the south. The project includes 12,189 residential units, one high school, two middle schools, six elementary schools, 157 acres of commercial, 90 acres of business park, 269 acres of industrial park, 510 acres of wetland preserve, 121 acres of community park, 57 acres of neighborhood parks, and 16 miles of trails.

New State Law requires businesses to recycle organic materials like yard clippings and food scraps

AB 1826 is a new state law that requires businesses and apartment complexes to recycle organic materials like yard clippings and food scraps. The law went into effect January 1, 2016 and the City is working to assist local businesses with the implementation of new recycling programs to comply with the law.  State law requires the following businesses to arrange for recycling services:
  • All businesses that generate 8 cubic yards or more of organics per week (yard clippings and food waste)
  • All apartment complexes that generate 8 cubic yards or more of yard clippings per week (apartments are not required to recycle food waste)
  • By January 1, 2019 businesses that generate 4 cubic yards or more of trash per week must implement an organics recycling program
Your business has two options for compliance:
  • Contact your waste hauling company to sign up for organics collection service. Your waste hauler will help you fill out and submit a Recycling Plan to the City, and they will provide you with bins for the collection of organic materials at your facility.
  • You may also donate, sell, and/or self-haul your organic materials to appropriate recycling facilities. If you intend to not use your waste hauler to collect your organics, please contact our Public Works Department to fill out and submit a Recycling Plan and a Self-haul Certification Form.
For questions on how a qualifying business can comply with this law, please contact our Public Works Department
