FIRST PRESS  | an online newsletter |  October, 2016

Ah, fall.

Cooler temps.

Leaves changing color.

Saturdays in the Grove.

Stewardship season at FPC.

Wait. What?

Don't freak. That last item on the list is actually a good thing. I promise.

This has been a great year for our congregation. With our seven-figure debt now paid in full, with a newly expanded and improved Fellowship Hall open and active, with new programs and plans for 2017 in place and with the search for an additional associate pastor to serve our young families now well underway, we remain an ascendant church undergirded by a continuing excitement and energy. And each of our many ministries grows out of the love and investment of the people who are First Presbyterian Church.

This is where 80 or more children and adults come on Wednesday nights during the fall for fellowship and learning. The incredible commitment of so many adults in this community of faith makes this a loving, fabulous place for children and youth to learn, play, and eat each Wednesday. This is where excellent worship on Sundays strengthens us all for each week that lies ahead. This is where our now long-term relationships with local mission outposts and with the people of Bongnotte, Haiti continue to be nurtured in a way that changes lives...both theirs and ours. This is where Ole Miss students come for worship and service, and to enjoy a respite from their busy lives on campus. This is where we gather together as a family to experience the grace and love of God, a beautiful blending of generations drawn by our hope in the promises of Jesus Christ.

Our programs and ministries are supported by those of us who enable them to happen through financial gifts and pledges, a fact underscored by the church's strong investment in staff leadership, property, curriculum and supplies. As your pastor, I hear over and over that you love your church and that it is making a difference in your lives and the lives of your children and grandchildren.

We want and need to do even more in 2017. But for that to happen, we need EVERYONE to participate in the pledged giving process this fall. Only about 60% of our family units make a pledge; if we are to grow and give more in the new year, that percentage will have to go up.

Your stewardship team is asking you to invest in our common life. Your financial engagement and commitment of any amount enable First Presbyterian Church to minister through worship, education, youth ministry, fellowship, fabulous choral music, and to spread the love in Oxford and beyond to those who need it.

Later this month, you'll be receiving more information on the pledging process. I hope you'll prayerfully consider all God has done for you and then give generously out of gratitude for those blessings to this enduring community of believers and seekers.

If you pledge regularly, will you join me in increasing your pledge for 2017? And if you've never pledged before, will you commit to doing so for the first time this fall?

It is all too common to speak optimistically about the future, but I truly believe the best days for this church still lie ahead...that "future of God's unfolding" to which I have so often alluded.

I look forward to all that awaits us along this rich and unpredictable journey toward home, and I continue to be grateful to serve in your midst.

Peace,

Setting the Table of Peace:
The Peace and Global Witness Offering
October 2, 2016

Every day, we are witnesses to conflict. We read news stories of violence and supposedly irreparable divides. Angry rhetoric fills our airwaves, inboxes, and social media feeds. We see conflict tear apart communities, families, even people we know. Surrounded by this strife, it's easy to see the world through a dark lens of discord. We may even come to share the doubt expressed in Psalm 78:19: "Can God spread a table in the wilderness?"

Yet our faith tells us despite our doubts, sins, distrust, or even anger, God not only sets a table, but also invites us to join it and partake in an abundance of peace.

The Peace & Global Witness Offering challenges us to look at the world, not as a place where conflict is inevitable but where Christ's peace is possible. The programs supported by the Peace & Global Witness Offering help bring people to tables of peace, justice, and reconciliation even in the wilderness of war, violence, and division. In places of abiding conflict, the Peace & Global Witness Offering supports the work of Presbyterian mission co-workers to bring together former enemies and begin healing the spiritual wounds of war. In congregations closer to home, support from the Offering enables efforts to turn back the tide of gun violence that claims too many American lives. In other communities, it's facilitating a transformative dialogue about the difficult subject of race to find new common ground. And everywhere, this offering supports witness, because by sharing the abiding love and mercy of Christ, more people can find their way to a seat at God's table.

Your support of the Peace & Global Witness Offering on acknowledges that a wilderness of conflict may surround us, but we are not abandoned there. If we open our eyes to the possibilities of peace, we see that God has set a table for anyone willing to take a seat.

Please give generously to the Peace & Global Witness Offering:
  • Through our offering on Sunday, October 2 or
  • Text PEACE to 20222 to give $10 or
  • Email presbyterianmission.org/give/peace-global

Music
Cherub and Chapel Choir News

Our Cherub and Chapel Choirs continue to rehearse on Sunday mornings, leaving worship after "A Time With Our Children." All the kids leave with Cherub Choir Director Nancy Maria Balach and, after a few minutes with Nancy Maria, the choirs separate into two age-appropriate groups and are joined by Chapel Choir Director Terrell Hall.

One of the choirs will sing in worship on the following dates: October 9, November 13 and December 11. During their time together on Sunday mornings, they will prepare the music for the dates listed above and will learn their Christmas musical "Starry Night, Noisy Night," scheduled for Wednesday evening, December 14. "Starry Night, Noisy Night" is filled with humorous references to modern distractions that prevent us from experiencing the true meaning of Christmas. The story is told from the stable animals' point of view: cows annoyed by the bright starlight; sheep spending so much time watching the activity outside the stable they almost miss the miraculous scene unfolding before them; and chickens too busy pecking out IMs to receive the message conveyed by the birth of Christ. The musical ends on a quiet, reverent, and worshipful note, turning away from life's distractions to celebrate God's great gift of love. Sounds like an applicable story for adults too!

We need and want all kids to participate; however, regular attendance at rehearsals is required. Bring your kids to church and encourage their participation in choir. You see, it's not just about participating in a musical; it's about teaching our kids to use their voices to praise God in worship for the rest of their lives. It's about teaching them to offer their best to God...and we can't do that without participation and practice. It's about a church filled with children learning and spreading the good news of the Gospel to our members and the Oxford community.

I cannot think of a greater gift for a child than the gift of music which, by the way, really is a gift for life!

Joseph Garrison
Mission

Say, Did You Know?

Many members of FPC are aware that our church supports The Pantry, The Christmas Store, and a mission in Haiti. But, say, did you know there are seven other local mission programs your congregation supports? They include Oxford Medical Ministries, Interfaith Compassion Ministry, Doors of Hope Transition Ministries, Memory Makers, More Than a Meal, Lovepacks, and Holding Hands. In the coming months, this column will highlight one of those local missions. If you would like to become more involved with any of these outreach programs, please call the church office.

Established to address at-risk homeless families, Doors of Hope Transition Ministries is an Oxford-based, nonprofit organization that provides temporary housing to struggling families for four to six months. Qualified individuals, often single mothers and their children, are provided one of three furnished apartments rent-free. A case worker assists the head of the family in writing a resume', finding a job, learning how to budget an income, starting a savings plan and learning other essential life skills. The objective of the program is to promote self-reliance and stability through a holistic, individualized approach.

Founded in 2011, Doors of Hope now has an annual operating budget of approximately $90,000. United Way provides 25% of the funding while local churches contribute approximately 15%. Fund raising efforts provide the balance. Doors of Hope employs a case manager and coordinates various volunteers from the community. First Presbyterian Church donates $3,000 annually and provides office space and secretarial support for the running of the program. Recently FPC has adopted one of the three shelter units. Upon completion of the program, a family moves out of one of the apartments. When this occurs, volunteer members of FPC will clean the unit and help refurnish it so it can be ready for the next family.

If you would like to assist with this outreach ministry through FPC, please call the church office. For more information regarding Doors of Hope Transition Ministries, contact the volunteer coordinator, Sabrina Lao, at [email protected].

A Day in the Life of PYF

We are back into full swing here in this community we call PYF. Throughout the past month, we have been focused on building and growing our own community of faith. Jr. High and Sr. High youth gatherings have been combined so far this year but will soon return to a regular split schedule. We have spent time delving into scripture, playing games, doing group building activities, and bonding with one another through fellowship. It has been a wonderful beginning to what is sure to be an amazing year.

PYF's Fall Retreat Happens This Month!

Our annual fall retreat is set for October 7-9 at Camp Hopewell. We will spend the weekend exploring scripture, growing in community with one another and worshiping together in God's beautiful creation. Throughout the weekend we are going to focus on what it means to be called to love one another and how we can put that love into practice in our daily lives. For more information, please contact me through the church office.

A Note of Gratitude

.....On August 28, God took the youngest of my children home. It is a phone call no Mama, no parent, ever wants to receive. The events of that day and the days afterwards swirled around me like a tornado showing no mercy for anything that fell in its path. But in that storm, there were breaks in the clouds.....people from near and far, people I knew and did not know, began to pour out love and support over me and my family.   The Oxford-Lafayette community turned out by the hundreds to show their respects to a life well lived, though short, fully lived.

I always said Walker was a 70 year old trapped in a 10 year old body. He was an old soul. As I have come to understand, these words spoken to me by persons near to my heart, my child's work on earth was done. He lived 70 plus years in his brief 14 on this earth. He touched an impacted more lives and people than I think I ever would have known had this sequence of events not happened. As I looked into the faces of those who attended his services, my heart ached, but was also full. He was loved. Not just by his Mama, but by hundreds of others.

I believe in Jesus Christ. I believe in the plans God has for our lives, for my life and in His promises. I am not angry at God for scooping up my baby and bringing him home. Do I wish he was still across the hall tucked safely in his bed waiting for me to wake him up each day? Absolutely I do. Do I wish he was walking in the door, with his cap on crooked, to tell me all about the adventures he and Booger had on the farm that day? More than I have words to explain, I do. Do I wish to see those beautiful blue eyes and brush that mop of hair out of his eyes again? I will long for that all the days of my life....But God knew the number of hairs on his head and also knew that August 28th at 6pm, He was taking my child to Heaven. That was Walker's day....his time here with me and everyone else was done and nothing and no one could have changed that. It is easy to think what if I had done this, what if I had done that, what if what if what if....but that would have made no difference. As a Christian I am called to believe in Gods plan and His purpose in our lives and by believing as I do, I have to accept Gods will in my life. I have to accept that He has reasons for taking my child to be with Him. I have to accept that I may never understand those reasons fully. I also have to accept and embrace the good that comes out of my loss. Walker J laid the groundwork, in his 14 years, for many things that I am only beginning to comprehend after he went to see the face of God. His presence in my life has put me directly in the path of some of the best things that will ever happen to me. (and that is not easy to say, but I believe it is all part of Gods plan that his loss will never be in vain).

The friendships born in the face of tragedy, the support shown to my children by friends and teachers and family, the awareness that life can be short and we need to live each day as if it's our last-just like Walker Joyce did. There are many many dots I have yet to connect, but I do know that God is weaving a beautiful and exquisite tapestry out of this loss. He is bringing people together, He is bringing communities together, He has His hand in everything related to this and my child's death will never be in vain because of that. His life's purpose will live on long past his earthly presence did.

There is no way to thank all of the people who have come to mine, my children's and my family's side during this time. The generosity that has been shown to us over and over, the calls, the texts, the visits, the meals, the army of people who have cared and cleaned and cooked, the memorials, the tributes....and mostly the prayers....without those, we would all be lost. Thank you will never be adequate to express my gratitude to each person who has touched my life during this time. I ask that you keep us all in your prayers for as long as you feel called to do so. I would also ask that you share with me how Walker J touched your life, a story or a photo....whatever you can share with me, I would love to hear and see. These things are hard right now, but will comfort me in the days and years to come so please don't be afraid you will upset me....I want to talk about him, I want to keep that light shining as brightly as his light was when he walked this earth.

Now I have a new chapter to create, God is guiding the pen....I close the door to the past and open the door and step through to the future and begin this new chapter surrounded by more love and support than I could ever possibly conceive of and the most beautiful guardian angel I could ever know watching over me......and the Lord said, Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. -John 14.27
