Remembering the SAINTS
|
|
No (hu)man is an island entire of itself; every (hu)man
is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;
if a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if a promontory were, as well as any manner of thy friends or of thine own were; any (hu)man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in (hu)mankind.
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.
Dear Friends~
Yes, it is October but at Hosanna we are turning our worship planning to November and ALL SAINTS Sunday (November 6)- that Festival Sunday in the church year when we remember those who have died
in the faith. On this Sunday we will name those persons who have died in the past year and passed into the nearer presence of God. We will take this opportunity to remember all those in our lives who have died in the faith- people who have helped shape our own lives of faith. Who is that for you? Might you have a piece of memorabilia (a picture, a poem, something else)- that you might be willing to share- to bring to the table- as together we remember? We will begin collecting these items during the month of October- a "Saints Table" will be placed in the sanctuary this week as we begin collecting these remembrances of those we have loved.
The reality is that we are all bound together, connected in a mystical and holy communion and that each joy we celebrate brings joy to all and each death we mourn deprives us all. We are connected - interconnected - to each other (see Donne's prose above). And while we may forget that - and even be induced to see those around us as competitors rather than as brothers and sisters - a part of All Saints' Day can move us beyond only remembering the dead to also recommitting ourselves to the living, to seeing in each person around us a beloved saint and child of God.
Let's do this together!
See you at Church!

Healing the Heart of Democracy-
The Courage to Create a Politics Worthy of the Human Spirit
by Parker Palmer
The author looks with realism and hope at how to deal with our political tensions for the sake of the common good.
Palmer writes:
For those of use who want to see democracy survive and thrive - and we are legion-the heart is where everything begins: that grounded place in each of us where we can overcome fear, rediscover that we are members of one another, and embrace the conflicts that threaten democracy as openings to new life for us and for our nation.
Read the book, then come for the discussions at 7pm on Tuesdays:
- September 20: chpt 1-2
- October 4: chpt 3-4
- October 18: chpt 5-6
- November 1: chpt 7-8
