"I have competed well; I have finished the race; I have kept the faith" ~ 2 Timothy 4:7
Dear CYO Athletics Community,
As we have begun our coaches meetings for the program year, we have shared with our coaches the Prayer Intentions from Pope Francis from August 2016 In it Pope Francis extols sports as a place to build a culture of encounter toward world peace.  Given my sense that Pope Francis was talking primarily about this in the context of high level international competition and the Olympics where nations are competing against one another and his intention may be a bigger ask, our belief is that we should be able to create "friendly encounters" in CYO Athletics.  Basically, we have asked coaches to work together as one community to create the best possible environment for our kids to compete, to develop and to, most importantly, have fun.

Our mission statement for CYO Athletics is:  CYO Athletics is sports done a different way - as one community. Individuals and teams strive for greatness in accordance with Gospel values. To develop the whole person, we teach success is not measured solely by the scoreboard, but by the effort, team play, and fun of the experience.

While our youth can have a very positive experience if our team and our local community works to enhance their experience, the best possible outcome is when we as a larger community work together to create for all the competing youth to have the best possible experience.  Here are some ways in which we can work together: READ MORE.

Blessings,

Seattle University Soccer - CYO Night

Thanks to all of the players, coaches and teams who participated in the CYO Night on Friday, September 16.  It was a great celebration of youth soccer as well as an opportunity to see a great game of collegiate soccer with Seattle U. winning on a direct kick, golden goal in OT.  There are more games left on the home schedule and is a great opportunity to have a team/family outing to an affordable experience of high level soccer - especially when the athletes 6th grade or younger sign up for the Rudy's Kids program (see below!).

Seattle Parks Budget Notice

CITY OF SEATTLE BUDGET - FIELD COSTS

We have just received information that there are proposed changes from Seattle Parks and Recreation in the budget proposal submitted by the Mayor to the City Council on September 16, 2016.  City council will adopt the final budget on November 21, 2016.  We share this information with the context that there is extremely high demand for athletic fields in the City of Seattle and we are fortunate to have access to the fields that we do, even if it is not ideal nor fully what we "need".

A complete list of Seattle Parks and Recreation 2017-18 Proposed Fee Changes and the complete Proposed Fee Schedule can be viewed at: www.seattle.gov/parks.

They include proposed fee changes for use of parks department fields - we currently fall under "youth outdoor use" in their categories:
  • Youth Outdoor Use/Hour for synthetic fields - currently $6/hour for practice and $10/hour for games would be $15/hour for either practice or games
  • Youth Outdoor Use/Hour for non-synthetic fields - currently $6/hour for practice and $10/hour for games would be $10/hour for either practice or games
  • Outdoor Field Lightning - currently $20/hour would be $30/hour
While we are still analyzing the impact this would have on the costs of our program, the most likely scenario would be a direct increase in fees for those parishes/schools that use practice fields through the Seattle Parks Department and an increase in overall team fees to cover the increased game costs.

If you would like to give input on budget priorities, you can do so by emailing City Council at council@seattle.gov or attending one of City Council's two public hearings below.
  • Wed, October 5 @ 5:30pm (sign-up at 5pm) - Council Chambers, City Hall (600 4th Ave, 2nd Floor)
  • Tues, October 25 @ 5:30pm (sign-up at 5pm) - Council Chambers, City Hall (600 4th Ave, 2nd Floor)
