Young International Academy students, obviously love learning with Instructor Quynn Johnson at VSD 2015.

Classes Will Participate in 4 Festival Activities:

Historical Presentation by noted historian C. Daniel Dawson (Middle/High School)  or Dianne Walker (Elementary).  The presentation is a fascinating presentation about how Tap Dance has shaped ideas, culture and entertainment over the years and today.

Mr. Dawson will also make this presentation during the Festival at Flint Institute of Music on Sunday at 10:30 am, and at a community presentation on Monday October 31 at McCree Theater (In partnership with Neighborhoods Without Borders).  All are welcome and this event is free.

Workshops Led by Tapology Visiting Artists.  The workshops are a lot of fun.  Students are taught a simple routine by professional dancers who are devoting their time & skill to share their art with the youth of our community.  Please let your students know that they will participate in an introductory tap dance class

  • During workshops, students should be respectful of the artist instructor, quiet and participating in the group activity.  This portion of the day - 45 minutes - is physical.   Special dance floors have been set in the instruction rooms for students to learn a simple routine.   Students should go to restrooms before the activity starts.  No students are to loiter in hallways.
  • Camera crews may be on hand from local television stations.

LUNCH WILL BE PROVIDED THRU A PARTNERSHIP WITH GCARD.  Please do not bring lunches to the program unless student has a special allergy.  Only these special lunches should be brought in a large box with your school & teacher’s name writen on the outside in bold black marker.  Lunch is held in the Atrium at FIM.

Regular work activities are going on at FIM during VSD.  Teachers, help to insure quiet lunch periods and orderly conduct.  We ask that teachers help groups maintain the beautiful facility at FIM by seeing that students have cleaned up lunch trash before leaving for the next activity.  Thank You!

Concert Performance.   All of the VSD students come together at the end of the day.  Here students get to see their dance instructors along with rest of the faculty, live on stage, along with our amazing jazz band.

Principal dancer in the Paris production of Black and Blue, as well as principal and assistant choreographer in the Broadway production; Walker is considered by many female tap dance artists as the transitional figure between the young generation of female dancers (such as Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards, Germaine Ingram, Ayodele Casel), and the "forgotten mothers of tap," such as Edith "Baby" Edwards, Jeni LeGon, Lois Miller, and Florence Covan.

Mable Lee - Concert

Mable Lee, the sassy chanteuse and jazz dancer with the million-dollar legs who was regaled in the 1940s as "Queen of the Soundies".  She was a child prodigy who at age twelve, was performing in the first black-owned nightclub in Georgia, The Top Hat.

Lee worked at such Harlem's nightclubs as Small's, Ubangie Club, and Club Sudan. And then went to London for eighteen months, where she performed at the Palladium. The London critics called her "the second Florence Mills."  During World War II, Lee performed in the first all-black USO unit; conducted by Eubie Blake and his sixteen-piece orchestra.

In 1969, she was the only woman to perform with Chuck Green, Lon Chaney, and James Buster Brown in "The Hoofers".  Since 1999, Lee has performed regularly in National Tap Dance Day's "Tap Extravaganza".  Like many performers from her generation, Lee has achieved that rare level of "entertainment" that identifies a true performer.
