Giving - and Giving Back:
A Remarkable Breakthrough Story
In 2002, Jayme Lipkin-Moore was a 17-year old senior at Pinkerton Academy, determined to make a difference in the world. Gifted, intense and socially conscious, Jayme had already taught at Breakthrough for two summers, an experience that profoundly affected her and further ignited her commitment to social justice and educational equity.

One of Jayme's students at Breakthrough that summer was Kerlyne Desire, a shy, inquisitive and hard-working 6th grader.  Kerlyne, one of four children of a Haitian family living in Manchester, had jumped at the chance to apply to Breakthrough, and she thrived under Jayme's high expectations, positive energy and support.  At one point, Jayme asked Kerlyne if she could draw a picture of them together, and Kerlyne agreed. Jayme's drawing is featured at the top of this newsletter.

Several months later, Jayme died in a tragic accident in Boston, and the drawing was forgotten.

With the tremendous love and support from friends, family and communities, Jayme's family established Jayme's Fund for Social Justice to carry on Jayme's spirit.  Jayme's drawing was found and Kate Erskine, the director of Breakthrough at the time, confirmed that it was indeed a drawing of Jayme with Kerlyne.  The drawing came to symbolize Jayme's legacy.  Now, nearly twelve years later, Jayme's Fund has contributed to many social justice causes, including a total of $30,000 to Breakthrough's endowment. The income from that gift is enough to sponsor the participation of a Breakthrough student each summer in perpetuity.

And Kerlyne?  She went on to attend and graduate from Gettysburg College, the first in her family to earn a college  degree.  Now employed full-time in Manchester with Cityside Management Corporation, Kerlyne has just joined the Advisory Board of Jayme's Fund where she will carry on the work and spirit of her Breakthrough teacher and mentor so many years ago.

The Flip Side of Teaching at Breakthrough
As college and high-school students like Jayme connect the sobering statistics about educational inequity with the bright, motivated, and engaging children in their classes, they are challenged and inspired to consider their roles in closing the Achievement Gap and ensuring the success of all students. Breakthrough is revolutionary in this regard: those who provide the "services" are educated by the "clients," and those who seek to change lives often find themselves transformed.  Quite simply, this means that every day at Breakthrough, students are teaching students from both sides of the teacher's desk.
The Summer Teaching Fellow Internship - Apply Now!
Breakthrough is one of the most highly respected opportunities in the country for college students (and high-achieving high school students) to learn the foundational skills of teaching. As a Teaching Fellow at Breakthrough Manchester, you learn by doing; we teach you how to lead powerful lesson plans that activate learning and use effective teaching strategies to engage and motivate your students.
The Early Action application deadline is January 6.  The final application deadline is February 25.

Breakthrough is both rigorous and rewarding; we provide the type of intensive, practical training in teaching that is rarely offered to those who are considering or just beginning their studies in education.  Based on Doug Lemov's landmark Teach Like a Champion, the training that Teaching Fellows receive is culled from years of observing the techniques of highly effective teachers in lesson planning, classroom management and student achievement.

"My time at Breakthrough Manchester this summer was all consuming, filled with things that pushed me, and so, so much fun. I was a teacher, a friend, a coworker, a counselor, a motivator, a leader, an organizer, a collaborator and a student. While I probably worked close to 75 hours a week and even dreamed about Breakthrough, I am so happy to have spent my summer there. I feel like I learned how to connect with students, fellow teachers, and staff in both professional and personal ways. After this summer I feel much more grown up and confident in my abilities.  Thank you again for a wonderful experience."   - Becca Hawk, a college junior & Breakthrough Manchester teacher

MissionAndVisionOur Mission, Vision and Program
Our Vision
All young people, regardless of circumstance, can achieve their full potential as students, teachers and leaders.

Our Mission
The dual missions of Breakthrough Manchester are to launch promising Manchester middle school students, particularly those with limited opportunities, on the path to college while inspiring high school and college students to pursue careers in education.

We do this by:
* Recruiting and selectively admitting high-potential sixth graders with limited opportunities from Manchester middle schools for a tuition-free, three-year program
* Providing three rigorous, joyful academic summers and school year supports to admitted students
* Recruiting, training, mentoring and supporting college students, and some local high-achieving high school students, as excellent teachers
* Connecting with similar programs serving Manchester high schools to create a pipeline of opportunity for Breakthrough students as they enter ninth grade
* Engaging a broad array of stakeholders in understanding, promoting, funding and championing both missions of Breakthrough.

Background
A partnership between the Manchester community and The Derryfield School, Breakthrough Manchester was founded in 1991 as "Summerbridge Manchester" to help promising middle school students, particularly those with limited opportunities, build the skills and confidence to enter and succeed in college-preparatory high school programs while inspiring talented high school and college students to pursue careers in education. In its 23rd year - now with a new name which reflects the year-round nature of the program - Breakthrough Manchester is a tuition-free, college-preparatory program for middle and high-school students and a teacher-training program for high-achieving high school and college students. Featuring intensive summer sessions and school-year Saturday academics and enrichment, Breakthrough Manchester has supported the academic success of over 930 Manchester students and recruited, trained, and challenged over 800 college and high-school students from across the city and country to pursue careers in education.

A National Movement with a National Reputation
Breakthrough Manchester is a member of the Breakthrough Collaborative, a national network of 30 sites in cities across the country. The Breakthrough Collaborative, along with the White House and MTV, is frequently chosen as a Top Ten Internship by The Princeton Review and is a recipient of the 2006 Klingenstein Leadership Award from the Klingenstein Center at Columbia University, the 2007 Excellence in Summer Learning Award from the Center for Summer Learning at Johns Hopkins University, and the 2009 Excellence in Education Award from Senator Barbara Boxer.

Essential Services
Middle-School Summer Sessions: The intensive six-week summer sessions are the highlight of the Breakthrough experience. Featuring daily academic classes in Literature, Writing, Math, Science, and Leadership, the summer sessions also offer engaging co-curricular and enrichment activities, such as foreign language, music appreciation, dance lessons, athletics, and public speaking. The academic curriculum is rigorous, based on state standards and research-proven best practices in each discipline. Every night, students complete 1 - 2 hours of homework. Fridays feature dynamic field trips, ranging from visits to universities to community-service projects. The unique Students Teaching Students model creates an intellectually engaging, spirited, and energetic environment for students while fostering a supportive community and building a strong peer network of college-bound students.

Middle-School Year-Round Program: Saturday events once per month in the winter and spring address school-year needs and skill development by focusing on academic acceleration, enrichment, and community-building. Counseling on high-school options helps students successfully enroll in Level 3 and 4 college preparatory courses and, in some cases, students apply for and enter college-preparatory boarding or day schools. The year-round program fosters the energetic and spirited sense of community and engagement that are begun in the summer sessions.

Transition to High School Program: Involvement with Breakthrough during high school is encouraged, but optional, for Breakthrough students. The Derryfield College Counseling office works closely with Breakthrough, has staff with deep knowledge of the college search and selection process from both student and institutional perspectives, provides workshops such as college counseling and financial aid, and maintains the school website with easy access to a wealth of college-bound information and resources. In addition, Breakthrough works hard to establish and maintain a pipeline of opportunities with similar organizations and programs that work closely with Manchester high school students, such as Access Academy through St. Anselm College, Upward Bound and Educational Talent Search (ETS) through UNH, Caring Adults Promoting Student Success (CAPSS) through Big Brothers Big Sisters, and others.

High-School and College Student Teacher-Training Program: To fulfill the other portion of its mission, Breakthrough trains high-achieving high school and college students to teach. With guidance and support from professional educators, college and high-school students shoulder the responsibilities of full-time educators as they implement curricula, plan daily lessons, manage student behavior, and commit their time to helping younger students follow in their footsteps on the road to college. As the college and high-school students connect the sobering statistics about educational inequity with the bright, motivated, and engaging children in their classes, they are challenged and inspired to consider their potential roles in closing the Achievement Gap and ensuring the success of all students. Breakthrough is revolutionary in this regard: those who provide the "services" are educated by the "clients," and those who seek to change lives often find themselves transformed. Quite simply, this means that every day at Breakthrough, students are teaching students from both sides of the teacher's desk.
