Middays at the Meeting House: History of the U.S. Lightship Service on Oct. 7th
The Old South Meeting House (310 Washington St.) continues its Middays at the Meeting House series with "History of the U.S. Lightship Service, 1820-1985" on Friday, Oct. 7th.
This is part of the series "Beacons of Beantown: 300 Years of Boston Lights," and is co-presented by the Old South Meeting House and Friends of the Boston Harbor Islands.
From 1820 to 1985, the US government built 179 lightships, ships that functioned as "floating lighthouses," in coastal waters and on the Great Lakes. These environments presented hazards and conditions making construction of lighthouses impractical. The largest lightship ever built in the country was the Nantucket Lightship/LV-112, pictured above. Robert Mannino, Jr., president of the U.S. Lightship Museum, will share the speak. Admission is $6, $5 for seniors and students with ID, $1 ages 5-17, and free for OSMH members.
