Meet Your Firefighters at their Open House Event
Saturday, October 8, 2016, 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.
Learn about fire safety and meet your firefighters at their annual Open House Event on Saturday, October 8 from 1 pm to 4 pm at the Adams Fire Station (572 South Adams). Take advantage of the opportunity to operate a fire hose and view portable fire extinguisher demonstrations. In addition, attendees will enjoy an EMS and vehicle extrication display, along with HAZMAT apparatus and equipment. Enter a raffle and enjoy

City Finishes Street Paving Projects
The Engineering Dept. is pleased to announce that the following streets are almost 100% complete:
 W. Maple Rd. - Cranbrook Rd. to Southfield Rd.
The City's major artery on the west side of the City was in need of reconditioning. A federal grant was awarded to the City to help pay for 80% of the cost of this project. A previously installed asphalt overlay was removed to reveal the condition of the older concrete pavement below. More repair work of the base concrete pavement was required than expected, which extended the length of the job about 2.5 weeks longer than planned. Ajax Paving Co. worked many long days, including Saturdays and Sundays, to get the job done as quickly as possible. The road is now open again to traffic, and should provide a higher quality driving surface for many years to come.
 Webster Ave. - Adams Rd. to Eton Rd.
Torry St. - Haynes St. to Webster Ave.
As part of its ongoing commitment to maintaining its street, sewer, and water network, these local streets were reconstructed completely, and opened back to full use at the end of September. Improvements included new water mains on both streets, new combined sewer on about half of the Webster Ave. segment, and new concrete pavement throughout. Sewer laterals were also replaced to over 70 homes where the existing pipeline was reaching the end of its service life.
Catalpa Dr. - Edgewood Ave. to Grant St.
Unlike most local streets, Catalpa Dr. is served by a County drain. The County Water Resources Commissioner's office determined that it was in poor condition, and needed to be rebuilt. The City took this opportunity to replace the water main and the street pavement as well, so that the entire block is renewed. Sewer laterals were also replaced back to the property line for the older homes as well. It was almost entirely finished and opened to the public at the end of September.

Shop PINK in Birmingham on October 15th!
In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Birmingham Shopping District is hosting this event in collaboration with The Pink Fund. The Pink Fund is a local charity that provides individuals in active treatment with financial assistance to cover non-medical expenses. The day will begin with yoga in Shain Park from 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. (see below for ticket information), followed by special shopping incentives in participating stores from noon to 4 p.m.

Curbed Leaf Collection Begins
If your street has curbs, check the map above to determine when leaves will be collected from your street. You are guaranteed one collection from the street during your designated weeks. We recommend raking your leaves into the street the weekend prior to your designated week. All residents may continue to bag leaves and place them out on their refuse collection day through Friday, December 16, 2016.

Celebrate at the Birmingham Farmers Market on October 23
End of Season Celebration! Trick-or-Treating ~ Free Craft ~ Live Entertainment
Join us as we conclude another wonderful season at the Birmingham Farmers Market's End of Season Celebration on Sunday, October 23 from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Stop by and enjoy the delicious smells and samples at the market and visit the Kids Zone for a free craft. Pumpkin carving demonstrations and live music are also on the agenda!
Children are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes and collect a special treat from the farmers. Don't forget your cameras; you'll have some great photo opportunities!

RCOC Expects Big Beaver Project to finish Early November
While the Big Beaver Road construction project is not a City project, we realize the closure impacts those who drive to and from Birmingham each day. Please note the Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) expects the project to be complete by early November. Learn more on the

October News from the Birmingham Museum
 Starting this month, visitors to the museum will be able to view the Hill School Bell in its new home! Hill School, which sat at the northwest corner of Chester and Merrill streets, was built in 1869 as the first public secondary school in Birmingham. In 1902 the bell was installed and signaled the beginning and ending of the school day for Birmingham students. In 1969 the building was demolished.
Want to ring the bell in person? For a suggested donation of $1, visitors can ring the bell during museum hours.
The museum is open Wednesday through Saturday, 1 PM to 4 PM and located at 556 W. Maple Rd. Parking is available in the Chester St. structure on the south side of Maple.
