The Loudoun Preservation Society recently granted Mosby Heritage Area Association (MHAA) staff and board members two awards. First, MHAA staff received a grant of $1,250 for the printing of a new driving tour booklet of the Aldie, Middleburg, and Upperville Cavalry Battlefields, fought in Loudoun and Fauquier counties from June 17-21, 1863. Then, MHAA Board Member Lee Lawrence and her husband Paul were crowned Preservationists of the Year for their work in restoring multiple historic homes in Loudoun County and for Lee's editorial work on two local women's diaries from the Civil War.

The Mariners' Museum was recently awarded an Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Museums for America collections grant. "Museums play a vital role in their communities supporting experiences and inquiry for people of all ages, fostering civic engagement, and serving as stewards of collections that represent the nation's cultural, historical and scientific heritage," said IMLS Director Dr. Kathryn K. Matthew.

Recently, Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe announced 23 Virginia Land Conservation Foundation (VLCF) grants, totaling $6.42 million, to support projects that
Fawcett-Dick-Murray House
will help shield 7,037 acres of at-risk land in the Commonwealth from development. The largest grant announced was for the City of Alexandria, awarded $900,000 towards the acquisition of the historic Fawcett-Dick-Murray House, one of the oldest and most authentic structures in the city, located at 517 Prince Street in Old Town. The opportunity to preserve the dwelling came about when the current owner volunteered to donate his equity in the property to the City in return for satisfying the remaining mortgage and real estate transfer expenses, enabling the property to be acquired at about half the market value. Once acquired, the Office of Historic Alexandria will operate the house as a museum and education center.

With gifts totaling more than $900,000, Dominion Resources, headquartered in Richmond, is the largest private donor to date to the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown's Campaign for Support. Replacing the Yorktown Victory Center, the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown will debut its permanent exhibition galleries and introductory film to the public on October 15 and 16.

From the James Monroe Museum: The Museum has been a bit of a construction zone in recent weeks as the functions of two gallery spaces were switched to make better use of limited space. The largest interior room now houses the exhibits used for visitor orientation. This room also remains the changing exhibit area, and can be utilized for public programs and receptions. Exhibits covering James Monroe's early life and experiences during the Revolutionary War were relocated to the former orientation gallery and have been augmented by a new four-minute video program. Curator Jarod Kearney oversaw the design and installation of the exhibit changes.

The Historical Society of Western Virginia, the parent organization of the O. Winston Link Museum and the History Museum of Western Virginia in Roanoke, will consolidate its museums in one location, board president Stephen Warren announced recently. The combined museum will be at the current Link Museum site, which is shared with Visit Virginia's Blue Ridge, the Roanoke Valley visitors' bureau. Local and regional history exhibits will be added to the nationally celebrated O. Winston Link collection.

As part of the City's commitment to preserving African American burial areas within Fort Ward Park, the Office of Historic Alexandria recently conserved three 19th century grave markers in "The Old Graveyard" on the east side of the park. One of the stones, that had once identified the burial site of Cornelia Spence, had broken in half and the pieces lay for years adjacent to a tree on the edge of the cemetery.  Spence's gravestone was carefully repaired by mason expert Howard Wellman. Although the exact located of Spence's grave is unknown, the restored stone was reset within the burial area at a representative spot where no other grave is located. Two other stones within the small cemetery were also professionally cleaned to remove decades of grime and pollutants.

From the Institute of Contemporary Art at VCU: Throughout the summer, concrete work continued with the rapidly rising second and third floors. Recent highlights include the pouring of cement for the first torqued exterior wall and the removal of scaffolding at the Broad Street façade - revealing the building's dramatic angles and unique form.
