Lift-the-Flap Books May Hinder Kids From Learning New Words
[Source:  Medical News Today]

Features in non-fiction children's books such as lift-the-flap may hinder toddlers from learning new words.

Dr Shinskey said: "Many educational picture books for toddlers often feature manipulatives like flaps or texture to encourage interaction, but do these actually help toddlers to learn new words? We wanted to test how a commercially-available book with or without flaps affected 2-year-olds' learning of a new word for an unfamiliar object."

Research Explains Sensory Integration Difficulties in Autism
[Source:  Psych Central]

New research confirms that individuals with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often have significant sensory deficits that influence social interactions.

Investigators determined the brains of individuals with ASD appear to lack feedback loops that help to process tactile information. This faulty processing results in social challenges.

Belgium researchers explain that many individuals with ASD are over- or undersensitive to sensory information. Some feel overwhelmed by busy environments such as supermarkets, others are less sensitive to pain, or dislike being touched.

SLP Corner: The Language of STEM
[Source:  Play on Words]

I've written a number of times about the language skills needed and used in STEM education. As speech language therapists we often work in subjects that people don't typically connect with language. I had a middle school student with a language learning disability and I worked primarily on math and science assignments with her, working through vocabulary, describing what worked and what didn't in solving problems, and explaining the processes. Students are required to be able to explain how they got to an answer, showing understanding of the concepts involved.
