Adverse Childhood Events (ACEs) - Cont'd
|
|
Last month, in my newsletter, I discussed the
ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences) Study and its importance to the field of medicine and all of the healing arts. This month, I'd like to expand on this topic and share some resources that I find particularly relevant to learning about, understanding and integrating this information into clinical practice.

Although there are many terrific books available on this subject (including the Alice Miller book mentioned in the above quote), I'd like to share two that I have found to be particularly informative and useful:
Scared Sick: The Role of Childhood Trauma in Adult Disease, by Robin Karr-Morse and Meredith S. Wiley .
Adverse Childhood Experiences, and their ability to have impact on our physical health, truly are a silent and powerful
"Hidden Epidemic."
We have greatly underestimated (and often times outright ignored) the relationship between our stresses and traumas (whether past or present) and our physical health challenges. The time has come in medicine, and all of the healing arts, to expand the framework from within which we treat the diseases and ailments of the body. Our life experiences are relevant, and need to be explored and taken into account as we assist our patients and clients in their unique healing processes.
The quote below is a powerful call to action for all of us who practice medicine and work in the field of health and healing:

My teaching and speaking schedule continues to be busy and exciting, as I spread the word about ACEs, and another central passion in my work, the healing power of Mindfulness as Medicine.
This past weekend, I spoke with Dr. Doni Wilson at the NYANP Annual Conference on "The Power of Addressing Chronic Conditions From the Perspective of Stress Using Mindfulness." It was truly a pleasure to be a part of this year's conference, which had "The Mind-Body Connection" as its theme.
Later this month, I will
be teaching an intensive weekend workshop, "Connecting the Cell and the Self: How Biography Becomes Biology and How to Heal," at the
National University of Health Sciences (NUHS)
in Lombard, IL. This is a comprehensive training in Mind-Body Integrative Medicine for healing professionals.

Make sure and check my
event calendar
regularly for details on all my upcoming classes, lectures, workshops and Webinars.
