From Mrs. Rowley

We are finally done with our online Scantron testing for the Fall, except for a few make-ups.  It went really well, and I think the students enjoyed the change.  We are very grateful to Mrs. Greshock and Mrs. Kiernan for the hard work on scheduling and administration support and making it all go smoothly.  This adaptive testing has set the baseline for our students and we are excited to track each individual student's progress throughout the year.

Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who came and helped out at the parish picnic.  What a witness to community!  A special thanks to Mrs. Sarah Moran for coordinating the school volunteers for the games.  Unfortunately I did not get a chance for a pony ride, but maybe next time!

Next week, we are going to try something new and innovative in the Buzz - instead of my normal "blurb" I will be recording a video message.  Let's embrace the technology!  At yesterday's Principals' Meeting I received an "Oscar" for doing the morning announcements and prayers by video.  Stop by the office and see the honor given to St. Ambrose School!

Box Tops for Education

Here is the Box Top form for October.  Please print as many as your student would like to use.  Just a reminder that for every sheet of UNEXPIRED Box Tops, your child's name will be entered in the drawing for a gift card.  All sheets must be in by October 19.

One of the challenges of being a parent is arming your children with the skills to handle the obstacles life presents. Teaching them how to use 911 in an emergency could be one of the simplest - and most important - lessons you will ever share.

Talking About 911 with Children
Not that long ago, there was a separate telephone number for each type of emergency agency. For a fire, you called the fire department; for a crime, you called the police; for a medical situation, you called an ambulance or doctor.

Today 911 is a central number for all types of emergencies. An emergency dispatch operator quickly takes information from the caller and puts the caller in direct contact with whatever emergency personnel are needed - making response time quicker.

Everyone needs to know about calling 911 in an emergency. But children also need to know the specifics about what an emergency is. Asking them questions like, "What would you do if we had a fire in our house?" or "What would you do if you saw someone trying to break in?" gives you a chance to discuss what constitutes an emergency and what to do if one occurs. Role playing is an especially good way to address various emergency scenarios and give your children the confidence they will need to handle them.
